A Peruvan filmmaking team approached me because they were making a documentary about the rise of Peruvan rock during the 60s and 70s, an ambitious interactive website/film project called "Etcetera". They wanted an eye-catching, busy, MAXIMALISTIC poster, reminiscent of those 60s Californian psychedelic posters by Bonnie MacLean and Victor Moscoso, but also retain the essentially Peruvan cultural identity of the scene.
I'm a person already obsessed with the 60s counterculture and psychedelic graphic design, so making references of Moscoso's and MacLean's posters was no problem. Instead I had to prod the production team about the Peruvan markers and culture such as their natural flowers, bird species, Nazca lines and intricate woven patterns. PureRef was my friend by supplying images, while I was dotting the lines and handwritten text all through Adobe Illustrator. After an initial sketch run where we decided on the placement of the various graphic elements, I went into the nitty-gritty of making lineart, and then colouring.
We went through something like 40 different and crazy palette solutions until we ended up with the clay-red colour scheme of the final one. They were ecstatic with the finished result!
