The Process

Creating this poster for Blank Conversations Theatre Company's production of "Singin' in the Rain" was the most fun I'd ever had on a project. The process involved the printing of the poster on cardstock, and then scanning it back to get the authentic textures I wanted for the poster. Created entirely in Photoshop, I wanted to make the poster have a very specific hand-crafted/collage look and feel, presented in a vintage and simplistic way.

Inspiration for this poster came fairly quickly. The lead at Blank Conversations specifically asked for a retro 50's/60's feel for the final product. I happened to stumble across this vintage Disneyland Hotel matchbox from the same era, and knew that was the direction I wanted to go with the poster. The glitter effect and matchbox textures stuck with me when I initially saw the picture.

Attention to detail is one of the most important things to me when it comes to my design. As famous Disney Imagineer John Hench once said,
"Walt had the idea that guests could feel perfection. I once complained to him about the construction of some new stagecoaches... and told Walt 'People aren't going to get this, it is too much perfection.' He responded 'Yes, they will... They will feel good about it. And they will understand that it's all done for them.'"
That quote has stuck with me ever since, and I apply it to almost ever aspect in my design and creative process, which included printing and scanning dozens of copies of the poster to make sure the textures and details were as perfect as they would be.

All the subtle details of the poster, including the shadows behind specific lettering, and shadows behind specific rain drops culminate to an enriching viewing experience for the audience, while still getting the message of the poster across in a clear and neat way.
