The Range TV started as an idea my friends and I had. Created in my free time working for The Range, we wanted to give the best possible multimedia experience at our venue during concerts. In short, The Range TV is a low-power analog TV station broadcasted throughout the venue, used to present music, current weather, upcoming events, set lists, and more. The experience is presented in a beautifully retro/analog style, aligning with the business' main creative vision to promote to its own audience.

The Process

Assembled in OBS Studio with assets created in Photoshop and After Effects, The Range TV is a combination of my own graphic/visual design, and many other open-source projects and programs. Consisting of many different "channels", The Range TV is broadcasted throughout the venue to CRTs, flat screens, as well as the main hall projector, intended to give a fluid and consistent viewing experience no matter where you are.
The main "channel" or scene that is used is our Now Playing scene, that plays curated music and is presented with clear text showing the current song and artist, as well as an open source audio visualizer. As always, attention to detail is always an important aspect to me, and trying to create something visually appealing for concert-goers to enjoy during intermissions was the main goal.

The beauty of having each scene set up in OBS Studio is that you can manually switch through the scenes when needed, or even set them up on a timer to be cycled through. For instance, switching between the Now Playing scene to the Set List scene while still having the music playing, along with the mini Now Playing in the bottom right, means that no information regarding the music is lost.

My favorite aspect of The Range TV is the fact you can pick it up anywhere in the building, as long as you have a compatible antenna. That means that anything that shows up on either our projector or TVs, or even when I go to record footage using my capture card, has a beautifully distorted/analog/VHS style look, without the need for any kinds of plugins to try and mimic the style.

Inspiration for the look and feel of this project came fairly easily, as it was all based around the vintage Weather Channel look and aesthetic, so naturally that's where I started. I based the designs of all the scenes from the core Weather Channel look and scenes. When it's all put together in this medium, the graphics looks straight out of the past, which was one of my main goals.
