I never thought that I would, one day, become a copywriter. My career in any industry began with an Escape Room establishment. How did I go from creating riddles to word sculpting?
During my time in the Escape Room industry, I noticed a lot of different approaches to seemingly simple riddles. People fought over the most minute detail to solve the puzzle.
My job was to set up all those riddles, oversee the gameplay, and most importantly, guide them through the room from start to completion before the time run out.
Here is where my formal education came in handy.
I am a teacher by trade, and through analysing people who were trying to get out of this situation before the timer runs out, I was able to give them a helping hand, teach them how to go further.
When their experience was complete, I waited for them to exit the room to discuss their gameplay.
After they were done, I told the group a story. A narrative about their bravery in the face of adversity, the way they managed to overcome obstacles, and their heroic win against the ticking of a clock. This is where my passion for storytelling shined through.
This can’t be connected to copywriting. Right?
Well, it is. Copywriting is all about people, isn’t it?
By seeing others solve riddles, I noticed that people like to complicate solutions for themselves. They rarely believe that it can be “that” simple. And sometimes they need someone that can show them the way.
But showing them the way cannot be done in blunt and out-of-style fashion. It needs to be a nuanced response, a tailor-fit answer to their problems. After they understand where they had made the mistake, the solving of the riddle is a matter of a couple of moves. Success is imminent.
Their win needs to be appreciated so the lesson sticks. Everyone is the hero of their own stories, and if the story has an extra win to it, it affects the players in a positive way. The choice they made and the results they have gotten are compensated at the end of each game.
I realized that I could use that in writing. And that is exactly what I do.
Working at an Escape Room has made me more appreciative of traits that we humans have. And it also has provided me with insight that has helped me become a better copywriter.
