The Story Behind the Project

Some projects feel less like "work" and more like a calling—this was one of them. When a mutual friend introduced me to Terry Oppong, Creative Director of TEDxAccra, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we spoke the same language: storytelling as a bridge, a force, a movement. Terry—a cultural curator, entrepreneur, and master connector—was looking for someone who understood not just words, but their power. Someone who could distill the essence of Pan-Africanism into bite-sized, thought-provoking social media posts that would do more than inform. The goal? Inspire. Intrigue. Unite.
TEDxAccra was preparing for its upcoming conference, and with Black History Month on the horizon, they wanted to highlight historical figures of African descent across the diaspora—not just those whose legacies were tied to the continent, but those who had shaped history worldwide. The mission was clear: to create a seamless dialogue between past and present, celebrating the ingenuity, resilience, and contributions of African-descended visionaries in technology, art, economics, and beyond.
I was in.

My Role: More Than Just a Content Writer

Official Title: Social Media Content Writer What I Actually Did: Researched. Wrote. Curated. Crafted stories that made people stop scrolling and lean in.

The Work: Bridging History and Innovation

Over the course of four weeks, I collaborated with TEDxAccra’s Social Media Manager, Creative Director, and Design Team to craft 21 Instagram posts that would ignite curiosity and anticipation. The posts weren’t just about relaying facts—they were about capturing legacies in a way that felt alive, urgent, and deeply relevant to TEDxAccra’s audience.
Each post needed to embody TEDxAccra’s mission: that bringing together diverse voices from the African diaspora is key to new paradigms of innovation. These weren’t just social media captions; they were storytelling capsules, designed to weave together narratives of revolutionaries, thinkers, and pioneers with the cutting-edge ideas being presented at the conference.

Deliverables & Skills Applied

Content Research – Deep dives into historical figures and TEDx speakers. ✅ Social Media Copywriting – Engaging, accessible, and educational posts. ✅ Pan-African Brand Alignment – Ensuring consistency in TEDxAccra’s messaging. ✅ Collaborative Writing – Working closely with the creative team to refine tone and style.

The Challenge: Crafting a Story That Resonates

Social media is a battlefield of attention spans, and TEDxAccra needed posts that weren’t just seen but felt. The challenge was threefold:
Balance Education & Engagement – Posts needed to teach without lecturing, sparking curiosity without overwhelming.
Honor the Pan-African Vision – TEDxAccra’s approach to Black History wasn’t confined to the continent; it was about the diaspora’s collective impact on global progress.
Generate Excitement for the Event – The posts weren’t just about history; they were breadcrumbs leading to the conference, where today’s changemakers were continuing the legacy.

The Strategy: Writing with Intention

To meet TEDxAccra’s goals, I developed a strategic approach that ensured every post felt meaningful and intentional:
Researching Themes and Figures 🔍 Identified key historical figures and ensured diverse representation across the diaspora. 🔍 Conducted in-depth research on event speakers to align historical themes with modern innovation.
Collaborative Content Creation ✍🏾 Crafted engaging, educational, and on-brand Instagram posts that blended history with the present. 🎨 Worked with the Design Team to ensure visuals matched the storytelling. 🤝 Aligned every word with TEDxAccra’s brand voice, working closely with the Creative Director.
Iterative Refinement 📝 Submitted weekly drafts for feedback, refining tone, accuracy, and clarity. 📊 Delivered final versions in easily accessible batches via a shared Excel spreadsheet for seamless scheduling.

The Process: Turning Research into Resonance

Kickoff Meeting: Met with the Creative Director, Social Media Manager, and Design Team to align on project goals.
Research & Ideation: Developed a content framework focusing on Pan-Africanism, historical impact, and the event’s key themes.
Drafting & Collaboration: Wrote engaging posts while ensuring consistency in messaging and brand tone.
Revisions & Finalization: Incorporated team feedback, refined content, and delivered polished, audience-ready posts.

The Outcome: Words that Connected & Inspired

The campaign was a resounding success. The posts not only increased engagement and awareness for the event but also sparked conversations about the power of the diaspora’s collective contributions. TEDxAccra’s audience wasn’t just scrolling past—they were pausing, reading, and engaging.
For me, this project was more than just writing. It was about shaping a narrative that honored the past, embraced the present, and invited people to be part of the future. It reinforced what I already knew:
📖 Words are powerful. 🌍 Storytelling is a bridge. 💡 And when done right, it can make people see the world—and themselves—differently.
