The Project

A rising screenwriter passionate about introducing West African narratives to the animated feature film sphere approached me for light notes on her polished screenplay. She sought quick, actionable feedback to prepare for an upcoming meeting with producers and executives interested in her story. My goal was to highlight areas for refinement, ensuring her screenplay was as impactful and polished as possible while maintaining the authenticity of its cultural narrative.

Skills & Deliverables

Lite Notes: Focused on dialogue, tone, and narrative flow.
Character Development Suggestions: Provided specific notes to strengthen character introductions and interactions.
Cultural and Visual Detail Feedback: Enhanced cultural authenticity and scene-setting elements.
Actionable Edits: Recommended minor adjustments to improve clarity and alignment with the story’s tone.

The Client

The client is an emerging screenwriter dedicated to showcasing West African stories in innovative ways, blending rich cultural narratives with the magic of animated storytelling. This screenplay marks her debut in pitching to major industry players, with a focus on sharing underrepresented perspectives in global animation.

The Challenges

While the screenplay was already polished, the writer wanted a fresh perspective to ensure it was ready for producer and executive review. The challenge was to identify areas where the story could be fine-tuned without overhauling its core. Specific concerns included maintaining cultural authenticity, ensuring the dialogue was natural and aligned with the tone, and spotting any narrative inconsistencies or minor errors that could detract from its professional presentation.

The Insight

The screenplay stood out for its vibrant characters, dynamic dialogue, and coherent storyline. However, a few small elements—such as word choices that clashed with the tone and opportunities to expand on cultural and visual details—presented an opportunity to elevate the script even further. The goal was to enhance the narrative's impact while keeping the focus on its unique cultural voice.

Target Audience

Animation Studio Executives: Interested in fresh, culturally authentic stories.
Producers and Film Investors: Seeking compelling narratives with strong global appeal.
Global Animation Audiences: Fans of richly layered animated films like Moana, The Lion King, and Coco, are drawn to culturally diverse storytelling.

The Strategy

To ensure the screenplay was pitch-perfect, I provided light notes that emphasized small yet impactful adjustments. Here’s how I approached the project:
Focused Feedback: Identified specific areas for improvement, such as word choices that felt out of place and dialogue lines that could be more polished for tone and clarity.
Cultural Detail Suggestions: Recommended subtle enhancements to deepen the cultural richness and visual storytelling while also being economical with her word choice.
Character and Story Flow: Suggested introducing key characters earlier to balance the narrative pacing and improve audience connection.
Formatting Edits: Highlighted minor dialogue typos and inconsistencies, ensuring the script adhered to professional standards.

The Process

Initial Consultation: The screenwriter shared her screenplay and outlined her immediate concerns, focusing on tone and coherence.
Review of Materials: I thoroughly read the script, keeping the writer’s goals and the cultural narrative at the forefront of my analysis.
Crafting Lite Notes:
Provided detailed notes on specific dialogue lines, pacing, and cultural authenticity.
Suggested minor edits to ensure clarity and consistency in tone.
Highlighted standout elements to reinforce the script’s strengths, such as vibrant dialogue and character development.
Deliverables: Delivered notes within 5–7 business days in a PDF format, organized for easy reference, with actionable suggestions clearly marked.

The Outcome

The screenplay was strengthened through targeted edits, ensuring a smoother narrative flow, refined dialogue, and enhanced cultural details. The writer left feeling confident in her story’s ability to resonate with producers and executives, armed with actionable changes that maintained the integrity of her voice. The project not only prepared her for her upcoming meeting but also equipped her with the tools to approach future drafts with greater clarity and precision.
