Colgate: Eco-Schools Puerto Rico – “Exploring a Sustainable Future”

Project Overview

As part of Colgate’s global commitment to sustainability and education, the brand partnered with OPAS (Pro-Sustainable Environment Organization) to host “Exploring a Sustainable Future,” an initiative recognizing Josefita Monserrate de Sellés Elementary School for its environmental leadership through the Eco-Schools Puerto Rico program.
The school was honored for embedding eco-conscious practices into its academic culture. The event celebrated over 20 students from the school’s environmental committee and was part of Colgate’s broader mission to build a healthier, more sustainable future.

My Role

As PR Strategist & Coordinator, I was responsible for:
Securing national media exposure and managing the story placement in El Nuevo Día
Coordinating on-site logistics and aligning press messaging across stakeholders
Managing communication between the Colgate brand, OPAS, school leadership, and student representatives
Ensuring that Colgate’s brand purpose—reimagining a healthier future for people, pets, and the planet—was clearly conveyed through earned media

Key Campaign Highlights

As PR Strategist & Coordinator, I was responsible for:
Public recognition of student-led sustainability efforts: waste reduction, energy conservation, and plastic elimination
Transition to reusable bottles and implementation of school gardens
The school served as a model for the Eco-Schools methodology, part of a network active in 70+ countries
Key message: “It’s not enough to know—students must act and engage with their communities.”

Results & Impact

As PR Strategist & Coordinator, I was responsible for:
300+ students reached through hands-on environmental education
Featured in a two-page editorial spread in Puerto Rico’s largest newspaper
Positioned Colgate as a leader in environmental education and CSR in schools
Amplified awareness of the Eco-Schools model and encouraged replication in other communities across the island

Why It Matters

This project exemplified how brand purpose can meet community action. I helped bring together media, local schools, and NGO partners to showcase Colgate’s sustainability leadership. The initiative empowered youth to become environmental advocates—while reinforcing Colgate’s mission through tangible, local impact.
