Overview

Last Chop is a surplus food marketplace app helping restaurants and stores sell unsold food at discounted prices. I worked on designing a fast, intuitive experience that balances time-sensitive inventory, pricing, and trust between sellers and buyers in the Nigerian market.

Problem

Users needed a simple way to discover, purchase, and redeem surplus food before it expired. Early flows were confusing, lacked urgency cues, and offered limited trust signals for first-time buyers. The challenge was to create a clear, fast experience while supporting multiple seller types and time-sensitive availability.

Constraints

Short product lifecycle for listings (perishable inventory)
Dual user types: buyers and sellers
Localized pricing, payment, and trust requirements for Nigeria
Small team with fast iteration cycles

My Role

Product Designer I focused on defining core discovery and purchase flows, designing layouts that communicate urgency and value clearly, and creating interaction patterns that scale across multiple types of sellers.

Key Decisions & Process

1. Highlighting time-sensitive inventory Listings display expiry or availability time prominently to encourage quick decision-making.
2. Simplifying purchase flows Streamlined the checkout process for speed and clarity, reducing cognitive load and friction.
3. Building trust signals Implemented seller ratings, reviews, and transaction confirmations to ensure users feel confident buying surplus items.
4. Localizing for market context Pricing cues, payment methods, and onboarding flows were adapted for Nigerian users and merchant behaviors.

Impact & Results

Faster, intuitive discovery and purchase experience
Increased conversion on time-sensitive listings
Strengthened trust between buyers and sellers
Scalable UX foundation for future marketplace expansions

Key Takeaways

Urgency and clarity are critical in perishable marketplaces
