Copywriting Sample

This is a sample I wrote to apply for a copywriting job.

You’ve probably heard about the cake that got viral on TikTok. In case you didn’t, this woman who owns her own bakery was complaining about her client, saying she was mad about the price and it being covered in sprinkles. Long story short, she was charging $80 for a tiny cake with an uneven layer. And as expected, TikTok made fun of her, starting a whole trend. So how did cake decorating got so big?

Back in my day, most cakes were simple. Maybe some colorful icing around the edges, a few sprinkles (just a few, nothing crazy), and a cute candle of your favorite character. Unless it was for a wedding, or a quinceañera, which required several tiers and fancier decoration.

But now, party planning involves a lot more. Toddlers get big parties, with fireworks and a candy table, even though they most likely won’t even remember any of it when they get older. So, obviously, cakes have to be just as big and fancy. You want an Elmo-shaped cake that will serve as centerpiece? It’s your best friend’s baby shower and you need dozens of pink sparkly cupcakes? I’m sure you can get that. There’s no limit.

In an age where we need to share everything about our lives, and when everything serves an aesthetic, so we share it with the world, people have discovered the great potential of the event planning industry. And it’s only beginning.

So, yeah, there is definitely a market for cheap and modest cakes, and it’s great if that’s your goal. But if you really want to make it, it’s going to take a lot more to charge that much for a cake. And practice.

Being a professional cake decorator is a career. People go to school for this. They know what they’re doing, that’s why they charge that much money.

If it’s a quality product, made by an expert, it’s worth it. But it’s not necessary.

In the end, cake is cake. It should be tasty.
