Let’s talk about crypto wallets. If you’re an experienced user, setting one up might feel second nature. But for newbies? It’s a completely different story.

Imagine downloading a new wallet, only to be bombarded with confusing terms like seed phrase, private key, and gas fees—no clear guidance. No explanation. Just frustration.

That’s the problem I set out to solve: How do we design an onboarding experience that’s seamless for beginners while still efficient for experts?

Crypto adoption is growing, but there’s still one major barrier—onboarding.

For new users, the challenges include:

Confusing terminology (What’s a seed phrase, and why does it matter?).

Complex multi-step signups that make wallets feel intimidating.

Fear of making irreversible mistakes when handling private keys.

And here’s the catch: We couldn’t just simplify things too much. Security is critical in crypto, and making the process “too easy” could mean users don’t fully understand the importance of key steps like saving their seed phrase.

So, how do you balance security and simplicity?

To crack this, I focused on three key principles:

Clarity: Every step should be clear and intentional, eliminating confusion.

Guidance: Instead of overwhelming users, tooltips and inline explanations should provide support when needed.

Efficiency: While keeping things simple, experienced users shouldn’t feel slowed down.

To make onboarding seamless while maintaining security, I:

Streamlined the signup process to remove unnecessary steps while keeping key security measures intact.

Added tooltips at crucial moments to explain unfamiliar crypto terms in simple language.

Created a guided seed phrase backup to ensure users understood its importance without feeling overwhelmed.

Designed a dual-mode experience, allowing beginners to follow step-by-step guidance while giving experienced users a faster path.
