The King's Worry Tree – Picture Book Illustration

The King's Worry Tree by Betsy J. Bocher is a gentle fairytale about a king who learns to set his worries down at a magical tree. The brief asked US Illustrations, a children's book illustration studio, to illustrate the story, design the cast, and illustrate and lay out the cover.

We created loose, painterly illustrations in a watercolor style, with castles, royal halls and blooming gardens. The king and his cast were designed to feel warm and approachable, supporting the story's social-emotional message.

We began with character sketches and rough layouts, then developed color in a soft, painterly digital approach. The cover was illustrated and laid out to match the interior, with revisions refining each page.
