Meet The Creature – Picture Book Illustration

Meet The Creature by Lisa Garrett and Brookelyn Davis is a soft, heartfelt story about first-day-of-school nerves and the imaginary creatures that come with them. The brief asked US Illustrations, a children's book illustration studio, to illustrate the book, design the boy and his creatures, and create the cover.

We worked in a gentle watercolor-style palette that keeps big feelings soft and approachable. The boy and his creatures were designed to be expressive and friendly, so worries read as companions rather than monsters.

We began with character sketches and rough spread layouts, then built color in a watercolor-inspired digital style. We refined the characters and pages through rounds of revisions with the authors.
