Formydoggy: Building a Pet Gear Store from Zero to $29K+ in Gross Sales
Client: Formydoggy — worldwide online store for stylish, practical dog gear (leashes, harnesses, jackets, grooming tools)
Role: Shopify Website Design & Build, UX Strategy, CRO Engagement Length: 9 months (ongoing)
Result: $29,554.85 in gross sales, $25,471.86 in net sales, 74 orders fulfilled, and a 5.79% returning customer rate (Jan 1 – Sep 18, 2026)
The Challenge
Formydoggy came to me with an idea, not a store: a worldwide pet gear brand built around the simple insight that "pet owners have one thing in common — we love our pets." There was no existing traffic, no reviews, no brand recognition — just a product line (leashes, no-pull harnesses, winter jackets, grooming tools) and a mission to make pets feel as good as their owners want them to feel.
Building this from scratch meant solving two problems at once: create a store credible enough that a first-time visitor with zero brand awareness would trust it with their money, and build the commercial infrastructure (product merchandising, trust signals, retention mechanics) needed to grow steadily over months, not just convert once.
Research & Discovery
Pet product shoppers are a specific kind of careful buyer — they're making a purchase decision on behalf of something they can't ask "does this fit? does this hurt?" This means trust and safety signaling matter more here than in almost any other e-commerce category. Before building anything, I mapped the store around answering the questions a pet owner silently asks before buying: Is this actually good quality? Will it be comfortable for my dog? Is this a real, safe company to buy from? What if it doesn't work out?
The Design & Build Process
Hero — Leading With Safety, Not Style The homepage opens with "CLEAN – SAFE – FAST" and "Don't save on health — Only the Best for your pet," deliberately choosing safety-and-quality language over generic style-focused copy. For a category where the buyer isn't the end user, reassurance about safety and quality does more conversion work upfront than aesthetic appeal alone.
Trust Bar — Proof Before the Pitch Immediately below the hero sits a tight row of trust signals: 4.89/5.0 from 7,292+ reviews, "Pet friendly material," 24-hour shipping, and "12,751+ happy Dogs are enjoying our products." Placing verified social proof and safety certifications directly in the first screen — before a single product is shown — front-loads credibility for a brand new visitors have never heard of.
Trending Products Grid — Letting Bestsellers Do the Selling Rather than a generic "shop all" prompt, the homepage leads with a Trending Products section (reflective leashes, winter jackets, no-pull harnesses, hair removers) with visible pricing, discounts, and a Quick View option on every card. This reduces the number of clicks between landing and considering a specific product, which matters most for new-to-brand visitors who haven't yet decided to explore the full 80-product catalog.
Mission Section — Turning "Just a Store" Into a Brand The "Why We're Here" section states the mission plainly: "Happy pet owners and even happier pets make us smile." This section exists specifically to convert a first-time, no-brand-recognition visitor into someone who feels like they're buying from people who care, not a faceless dropship storefront — critical in a market full of exactly that.
Outcome-Focused Proof — "We Make Your Pet Feel Better" Rather than describing product features, this section leads with the outcome customers report: fewer compliments-worthy moments turned into fewer pulling/choking incidents. Framing product benefits around a real behavioral outcome (less pulling, more comfort) speaks directly to the exact fear a harness or leash buyer has before purchasing.
Risk Reversal Grid — Removing Every Reason to Hesitate A four-part trust grid — money-back guarantee (30 days), 24/7 support, fast delivery, and safe/secure checkout — sits mid-page, systematically removing the standard objections (what if it's bad quality, what if I need help, what if it's slow, what if my payment isn't safe) in one scannable section.
Retention Built In From Day One — Email Capture & Community "Join our family" and "Register and Save" email capture points appear twice on the homepage, treating list-building as a core growth lever from day one rather than an afterthought — important for a from-scratch brand that needs to convert single purchases into repeat customers to grow sustainably.
Visual & Brand Direction A clean, bright, yellow-accented palette (paired with the brand's signature color) keeps the site feeling approachable and friendly rather than clinical, matching the emotional, pet-loving tone of the brand's mission statement throughout.
The Results
Nine months into the build, Formydoggy has grown from a from-scratch concept into a functioning, revenue-generating store:
$29,554.85 in gross sales (Jan 1 – Sep 18, 2026) $25,471.86 in net sales 74 orders fulfilled, 73 total orders 5.79% returning customer rate — meaningful early retention for a brand with no prior customer base A visible sales ramp-up mid-year as traffic and repeat purchases built momentum, shown in the store's own analytics below
