Overview

The building performance dashboard is a solution that I worked on when I was working as a UX/UI Designer & Marketing Executive in a sustainability tech start-up in HK.

The Company's Goal

The company aims to optimise energy and indoor air quality in buildings, which is responsible for over 60% of the carbon footprint in Hong Kong, with IoT and AI technologies.
The dashboard (app/web) is designed to drive building occupants' behavioural change in using electricity through monitoring and visualising sustainability-related data, overcomes users' neglect of their carbon emissions.

My Duties

Improve and optimise existing features and UI in visualising building data to achieve agreed energy saving/performance target, while minimising user's friction when they're using the dashboard;
Collect user feedback through workshops, phone calls, focus group, pre-program and post-program survey, and translate the feedback into actionable features;
Design wireframes, prototypes and user flow based on users' feedback and business needs;
Work closely with developers, data analyst and business team to optimise company's UX for sales and sustainability impacts;
Maintain and prioritise features in product backlog;

The Solution

Monitor and visualise aggregated building data collected from IoT sensors to corporate users including management and frontline staff through the dashboard
Predict building performance (e.g. energy usage) with A.I. model and compare it with actual usage. Allow users to track patterns by different time intervals
Push real-time alerts to users once the actual usage exceed the predicted budget and suggest customised solutions
Feed informative and engaging content to users to educate them related concepts and sustainability best-practice.

Key revamp - Digitalisation

After the app was launched for 3 years and we ran a few programs with different corporates, the team soon discovered weakness and pain points from both users and business angle.

We found that...

Users who mainly are the clients' staff, do not have enough motivation to save energy because they are already occupied with their daily duties. For example, the in-person user workshop which we held regularly for engagement, do not have a promising participation rate, which might make it harder to meet the performance improvement target agreed with the client.
The way the team used to actively build connections with frontline staff users through regular in-person meetings, site visits and workshops will not be feasible as the client base expands. A new way to engage and touch base with the users is needed.

To solve the problem...

We introduced a reward program and a feature called 'Discover' into the dashboard app/web, which is a digitalised learning platform.
With the reward program, users can enjoy incentives and feel recognised when they change their energy consumption behaviour in office.
The digital learning platform allows us to update educational content on regular basis and let users who completed the courses to earn scores for gift redemption. It also reduces the burden to the company's human resources.
