The Challenge

Renting equipment is stuck in the past. Whether it's construction tools, camera gear, or event supplies, the process usually involves phone calls, paper contracts, cash deposits, and a lot of trust on both sides. Online options exist, but most are clunky web portals that feel like they were built in 2010. There's no real-time availability, no secure payment, and no way to verify the condition of equipment before pickup.
This project focused on designing a peer-to-peer equipment rental marketplace app that makes renting as easy as ordering a ride. Owners list their equipment, renters browse and book, and the platform handles payments, insurance, and dispute resolution.

Design Approach

The design process started in Figma, where every screen was built to create trust between strangers sharing expensive equipment.
Key design decisions:
Category-first browsing. The home screen organizes equipment by category (construction, photography, events, outdoor, tools) with visual icons and trending listings. Users find what they need in two taps, not ten. A prominent search bar with smart suggestions handles specific queries.
Equipment listings with trust signals. Each listing shows high-quality photos, detailed specs, rental pricing (hourly/daily/weekly), owner ratings, verification badges, and real-time availability calendar. Renters can make informed decisions without messaging the owner first.
Seamless booking flow. Select dates, review pricing breakdown (rental fee, insurance, deposit, service fee), and confirm with saved payment method. The entire booking takes under 60 seconds. Instant confirmation with pickup instructions follows immediately.
Owner dashboard. Equipment owners manage their listings, track active rentals, view earnings, and respond to booking requests from a dedicated dashboard. Analytics show which items rent most frequently and optimal pricing suggestions.
In-app messaging. Direct communication between renters and owners for pickup coordination, equipment questions, and issue resolution. Message threads are tied to specific bookings for context.
Condition documentation. Photo-based check-in and check-out process. Both parties photograph the equipment at handoff, creating a timestamped record that protects against damage disputes.
Review system. Two-way reviews after each rental build community trust. Renters rate equipment accuracy and owner responsiveness. Owners rate renter care and communication.
Clean, marketplace-native design. White backgrounds with bold category colors, card-based layouts, and generous product photography. The design feels familiar to anyone who's used a modern marketplace app.

Booking Flow

The rental process follows a clear path:
Browse by category or search for specific equipment
Compare listings based on price, ratings, and proximity
Book with date selection and instant pricing
Coordinate pickup via in-app messaging
Document condition at check-in and check-out
Review the experience for both parties

The Result

A fully designed equipment rental marketplace app built in Figma, focused on creating a trusted peer-to-peer rental experience. The design serves marketplace startups, rental platforms, and sharing economy companies looking for a mobile app that connects equipment owners with renters through transparent listings, secure transactions, and built-in trust mechanisms.
