Manufacturing Copy: Translation vs Transcreation (EN/ES Sample)

The line
A machine builder wants to sell into Latin America. The English hero line is already good: Cut changeover time in half. Five words, one promise, aimed straight at the person who loses a shift every time the product changes.
What a translator returns
Reduzca el tiempo de cambio a la mitad.
Grammatically perfect. Every word accounted for. And it is wrong.
What the plant actually says
Cambio de molde en la mitad de tiempo.
On an injection or blow molding floor, nobody says tiempo de cambio. They say cambio de molde. It is the operation the whole building organizes its day around.
The buyer does not read the literal line and think this was translated. They think this supplier has never run a machine. Nothing further down the page recovers from that. The sale is gone by the first line.
The difference that costs the sale
Translation asks what the sentence says. Transcreation asks what the buyer needs to hear to believe the person writing has stood where they stand.
Every word in the literal translation is correct. What is missing is the business. A dictionary does not carry that, which is why a bilingual copywriter and a translator are different hires, and why the cheapest way to do this job is usually the one that ends up costing the most.
Where the vocabulary comes from
I co-owned and ran an injection and blow molding plant from 1994 to 2008. Fourteen years selling to industrial buyers, and fourteen years hearing what the floor calls things.
That is the method. I am not translating a sector I researched last week.
