Whitespace Is Risk

Modern digital product design worships minimalism. However, in high-stakes environments like fintech or global education, does excessive whitespace actually build trust, or does it trigger cognitive anxiety? This paper investigates the threshold where aesthetic "breathing room" is perceived as a lack of system stability.

Testing the Generational Divide

To evaluate information density as a trust mechanism, I designed a comparative HCI study isolating two distinct demographics:
Users highly acclimated to modern, spaced-out UI paradigms.

Density as a Proxy for Authority

The data revealed a stark behavioral contrast. While Digital Natives equated whitespace with premium experiences, Older Users experienced "Whitespace Anxiety." For them, a lack of information density signaled a lack of substance, leading to lower trust scores in critical transactional flows.

The Impact.

The paper provides a new heuristic framework for product strategists: "Density-Calibrated Design." It proves that information density must be dynamically adjusted based on the user's age cohort and the transactional stakes of the flow.
