Overview

EdFin Microfinance Bank sought to streamline its operations by automating a significant portion of its manual tasks and simplifying the loan disbursement process, which involved multiple teams operating in separate silos. As the lead designer, I spearheaded the creation of a new Admin Panel—a dedicated platform for administrators to log in and facilitate loan approval and disbursements. The primary goal was to enhance team collaboration and establish a reliable source of accurate data for all loan-related information.

Challenge

 Edfin microfinance bank faced a significant challenge when attempting to integrate with an enterprise service provider. During the integration process, certain loopholes were identified, and it became apparent that the existing solutions were not flexible enough to meet our specific requirements. This posed a considerable hurdle in achieving seamless collaboration and efficient workflows.Compounding the issue was the fact that different teams within the organization had independently devised their own workflow optimization methods, which seemed to work well for their respective teams. However, the accessibility and consolidation of loan-specific data proved to be a cumbersome task, as it was scattered across multiple applications and file cabinets. This lack of a comprehensive tool that catered to the needs of the entire organization hindered productivity and hindered the ability to make data-driven decisions.

Solution

To overcome this, I designed a comprehensive internal tool that streamlines the loan management process, enables seamless loan disbursements, and integrates seamlessly with external service providers to improve their process.

Approach

Our first step involved meticulous documentation of the current processes at EDFIN, ensuring a clear understanding of their intricacies. Together, I and my team of developers refined the project's scope. Through collaborative sessions, we diligently identified user requirements, delineated key features, evaluated integration possibilities, and crafted a detailed product roadmap that serves as our guiding compass.
The most essential features for the platform are stated below:

SEAMLESS LOAN DISBURSEMENT AND REPAYMENT TRACKING

We developed a disbursement module that automates the disbursement process after due diligence, facilitates fund transfer to approved applicants, tracks repayment schedules and generates reports for internal record keeping.

DATA SYNCHRONIZATION

To overcome the issue of data fragmentation across various departments and third party platforms, we took proactive measures by integrating a centralized data repository, where different teams can securely access and update critical information. Additionally, I ensured that the exporting functionality supports the extraction of data in various formats, enabling efficient collaboration and analysis across teams.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY COMPONENTS

To address the diverse needs of various departments, I crafted robust sorting, filtering, and exporting mechanisms. These filters were purposefully designed to cater to a broad spectrum of use cases, ensuring their robustness and adaptability. These dynamic features seamlessly adapt to the context of the table, empowering users to effortlessly navigate through specific data values and time periods.

OBTAINING ACCURATE DATA FROM LOAN APPLICANTS

Traditionally, this process relied on outdated pen and paper methods. Moreover, whenever an applicant submitted a scanned copy of their forms containing errors, the entire process had to be repeated, resulting in inefficiency for all parties involved. To tackle this issue, I developed a multi-step form. Additionally, I introduced a novel feature that empowers administrators to send edit requests directly to applicants. This enabled applicants to conveniently rectify any errors in their submitted forms, ensuring data accuracy while fostering a more efficient and collaborative process between all parties involved.

LEARNINGS

Throughout our collaboration with EDFIN, we conducted extensive user research to create detailed user personas and meaningful metrics, ensuring that the voice of the EDFIN team guided our product and feature decisions. From initial wireframes to interactive prototypes and the final implementation, incorporating these insights at each stage was essential to meeting the needs of EDFIN's internal users.
