Rio Tinto Alcan commissioned a comprehensive video production project to document the development of its landmark Kitimat Modernization Project — a complete rebuild of the aluminum smelter designed to increase production efficiency and dramatically reduce environmental impact. The company needed both on-location video capture in Kitimat and a new final production built from a combination of fresh footage and legacy B-roll shot during earlier construction phases.

The goal: create a cohesive, engaging, and technically accurate video that showcases progress inside the massive industrial complex and communicates the scale of the engineering achievement.

I travelled to Kitimat to conduct a dedicated filming session inside the new smelter facilities.

Key tasks included:

Full interior industrial videography using professional stabilization and lighting adjustments.

Capturing large-scale production environments: heavy machinery, overhead crane systems, fabrication decks, and structural steel work.

Documenting active construction zones and in-progress systems commissioning.

Collecting atmospheric and contextual shots to connect the construction story visually.

The environment required strict safety protocols, controlled movement through live work areas, and precise coordination with site supervisors.

Using both newly recorded footage and historical B-roll supplied by Rio Tinto Alcan, I produced a cohesive, narrative-driven construction film.

Story structure built around the modernization process and progressive construction stages.

Integration of legacy B-roll to show “before,” early build stages, and system assembly over time.

Color correction across mixed-era footage for visual consistency.

Smooth transitions, motion graphics, and closing title sequence (“Building the future together.”).

Final export prepared for internal communications, stakeholder presentations, and public-facing updates.

The result is a polished, informative video that visualizes the scale and sophistication of the modernization project, highlighting both engineering innovation and workforce coordination.
