"I Am a Liar” — A Campaign on the Hidden Scars of Child Abuse

Overview

This campaign tells the story of what it’s like to grow up in an abusive household where pain becomes part of everyday life. In many societies, abuse isn’t always seen as abuse - it’s dismissed, justified, or silenced. For a child, parents are their entire world, so they learn to hide the truth behind small lies like “I fell off my bicycle.” Those lies become a shield, a way to protect the people they love and the home they know.
But as the child grows, the bruises fade and the scars turn invisible. The hurt doesn’t disappear, it settles deep within, shaping who they become. The second phase of the campaign reflects this truth: “Some scars stay with you forever.”
Finally comes acceptance, the moment when the adult stops defending the past and starts acknowledging it. “I am not a liar.” That’s when healing begins. Because in order to move past something, you have to go through it. You have to accept that it happened, that it was wrong, and that it affected you. Only then can you truly begin to grow.

Objective

To create an emotionally resonant campaign that:
Raises awareness about normalized domestic abuse in households
Shows how emotional and physical abuse affect children into adulthood
Encourages open conversations and recognition of abuse as not normal

Concept & Insight

For a child, parents are their entire world - what they say and do becomes the truth. So when a child faces violence or harsh words at home, they learn to justify it:
“I fell off my bicycle.” “I fought with my sibling.”
These small lies become a survival mechanism, a way to protect their home and identity.
As they grow up, the visible wounds heal, but the emotional scars remain.

Execution

Medium: Digital posters created on Canva
Format: Three-phase storytelling through copy
Denial: “I am a liar” – the child hides their truth
Realization: “Some scars stay with you forever” – invisible trauma in adulthood
Acceptance: “I am not a liar” – reclaiming voice and healing

Tools Used

Outcome

The campaign resonated deeply with peers and mentors, sparking meaningful conversations about emotional awareness and healing. It remains one of my most personal and purpose-driven projects, a reminder that some of the most powerful campaigns come from truth.
