✦The Problem

As awareness grows regarding the link between food and health, one in eight UK young adults intends to adopt a plant-based diet.

However, changing diet is often perceived as a daunting experience.

✦ Key Insights

Our research shows these are the critical insights into their relationship with food.

1. Psychological Barrier to Dietary Change

They feel better after eating a meal that "they believe" to be balanced. This prevents dietary changes because removing meat feels like removing nutrition.

2. Mindful Eating Over Nutritional Content

What matters most is the feeling of being mindful of food choices, not the actual nutritional content. Hence, we can address nutritional concerns through increased food awareness. We must make users feel they have taken good care of themselves.

3. Routine-Routine Experience

Their tendency to get stuck in a repetitive diet causes them to feel excitement when breaking a routine. It feels exciting at the beginning, but then it becomes tedious. Therefore, it has to be a mundane-breaking experience throughout to be sustainable.

✦ The Design Principle

Enabling –– Enable the user to go through a frictionless diet transition
Personalised –– Customizing the user experience to meet individual preferences and needs.
Motivating –– Providing immediate, positive feedback and incentives to users for their actions.
