Enterprise Banking Onboarding - unified across 20+ countries
United Bank for Africa - one onboarding platform across 20+ countries
Who this is for:
Large regulated organisations where compliance requirements differ by jurisdiction and the current answer is a separate system per market.
The situation
UBA operated across more than twenty African countries. Each had different regulations, languages and currencies, and each had grown its own onboarding system. The fragmentation was simultaneously a compliance exposure and an operational cost centre. The design challenge was to unify without flattening - regulators do not accept a lowest common denominator.
What I actually did
Designed an integrated onboarding platform built on a configurable form architecture, so each market's regulatory requirements are configuration rather than a separate build.
Designed multi-language and multi-currency support into the foundation rather than as a localization layer bolted on afterwards.
Integrated digital identity verification across markets with different acceptable identity documents and different verification standards.
Designed the compliance-officer surface as a first-class product - the person who has to prove the bank is compliant needs an interface, not a database export.
Worked directly with the executive team, which meant designing the governance model alongside the product: who can change a market's requirements, and what approval that needs.
How I worked
Three months working with executive stakeholders, compliance leads and engineering. Given the number of stakeholders, I ran structured decision sessions with written rationale so decisions stayed made.
What the client reported afterwards
Outcomes as reported by the UBA project team. This engagement was measured on delivery and compliance coverage rather than published performance metrics.
Onboarding unified across 20+ countries on a single platform
Per-market regulatory adaptation built into the architecture rather than bolted on
Multi-language and multi-currency support delivered
Digital identity verification integrated across markets
