Project Overview:

The objective is to develop a goal-tracking app that will keep users motivated and on their toes in order to accomplish their goals

Problem Statement:

The problem with traveling today is that airplanes are expensive and take to much time. The average person can't afford to fly and even if they could, the time commitment is prohibitive. It would be great if we could fix that problem.

Challenges:

Design a user-friendly interface that makes creating and updating goals quick and easy to do.
Find a way to motivate users to consistently use the app and stay on track with their goals.
Implement a pricing model that is affordable and does not discourage users from using the app.

Design Process:

Since I was creating a product from scratch we based our process on the Design Thinking approach, and we followed the below process.

Discover Phase:

Understanding the User

To understand the target audience and their pain points and wants, I conducted an online poll. The poll included the following inquiries:
Have you ever used a goal-tracking app before?
If so, what made you choose that particular app?
If not, what are some of the reasons that have prevented you from using a goal-tracking app in the past?
What features do you think are essential for a goal-tracking app?
How often do you think you would use a goal-tracking app?
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
Do you prefer to track your progress toward your goals individually or with a community of users?
What challenges have you faced in achieving your goals in the past?
How do you currently track your progress toward your goals?
How important is the ability to set reminders and notifications for your goals in a goal-tracking app?
In order to better understand the issues faced by users of existing goal-tracking apps, I conducted research on app reviews.

“At least let people track more habits so they can grow to appreciate your app before they have to pay.”

“This takes away time that could be spent creating other tasks and working on other assignments.”

“This app is useless without a speedy internet connection.”

Define Phase

I conducted a thorough analysis of user data to better understand users’ pain points and needs.
Following this analysis, I created empathy maps based on the insights I had gathered.
I was able to identify key patterns and trends in user behavior that informed the design process. These insights proved to be invaluable in developing a user-friendly interface that made creating and updating goals quick and easy to do.

Problem definition

Users lacked motivation.
Users complained that creating and updating goals was a time-consuming and tedious process.
Users believed that paying a monthly fee to use an app was unnecessary and prohibitively expensive.

Possible Solution

1. Adding a daily quotes option
2. Categorizing objectives to make information entry easier.
3. Rewarding users with points so that after reaching a specific threshold, they can unlock a new goal for free.

Ideation Phase

During the ideation phase, we explored various ideas to understand what steps were most critical for users to be able to track their goals and feel motivated. We brainstormed different features such as daily quotes, categorizing objectives to make information entry easier, and rewarding users with points that could be redeemed for new goals. This process helped us identify key patterns and trends in user behavior that informed the design of a user-friendly interface that made creating and updating goals quick and easy to do.

Card Sorting

I then used the insights to help identify common themes and categories that users think about when setting goals and categorized them into five key features

User Flow

After defining the key features, I was able to define a user flow that would facilitate the app design process.

Design Phase

Once I had the main steps, I jumped into creating low-fidelity wireframes

Lo-fi Wireframe

UI Design

Users can categorize their goals, set reminders, and choose the motivational message type they want to receive
Users' lack of motivation and having to pay a subscription fee for more than one goal were the main problems. As a result, I included a feature that allows users to open up additional tasks or goals if they finish one within a predetermined time limit.

Takeaways:

🔑
People are seeking originality and usability because there are plenty of apps that are similar to ours as well. Customers want to know how your product will improve their lives.
