Review: The Lying Game by Sara Jane Woodley

A book as honest as life itself.

This is the story of Lachan and Lucy and how life brought them together. Lachan, due to a blown-up of proportions scandal at work, is forced to take a vacation while the company he works for decides how to handle the issue and their public image. As a result, Lachan decides to take a trip to Cascade Point, a small town where he spent much of his childhood and where his adoptive grandparents and his stepbrother live.

Something happens on the way, and he finds himself, against his will, trapped for a night in an old, dusty hotel with Lucy, a woman who is usually like a golden retriever but has just had a horrible date that has her out of her usual character.

Since they don't expect to see each other again, Lachan isn't very open with his feelings, and Lucy needs to chat to make the time more pleasant, they start a lying game: they ask each other questions that can only be answered with a lie. This is how they begin to get to know each other, or not, a little more and have fun while they wait to get out of that situation.

However, things start to change: Lachan's trip is extended, and due to causes of force majeure (I won't give more details to avoid spoiling), Lucy ends up having to move in with him. Thus begins the adventure of finding out if something that started as less than a friendship can turn into something more and if they will dare to tell each other their truths...

I loved this story and here's why:

1. I really liked Lachan's character development; he truly transforms little by little, opening his heart and reflecting on his history, his present, what he wants for the future, and the importance of family, from which he was so estranged. It felt very human and real to see how someone, after years of only dedicating himself to work and economic progress, begins to see that there is something more in life and acts accordingly.

2. Lucy's character is adorable, really endearing, and the twist towards the end also demonstrates her own narrative growth. I like it when a story generates those evolutions in its characters.

3. It has genuinely funny parts; I laughed out loud several times.

4. It doesn't have sexual intimacy scenes, yet the romance and tension are there; but above all, the tenderness, intimacy, honesty, and openness required to build a romantic bond are perfectly reflected.

5. Thank goodness, or its author lol, it doesn't have unnecessary fight scenes that sometimes make the plot lose all sense or make the characters become hateful or unbelievable.

6. It develops at a good pace; it's well-written, with good use of vocabulary.

This is the first novel I've read by Sarah Jane Woodley, and I definitely would like to read more from her. I'm glad to have discovered her writing. And I appreciate having received an ARC.

Un libro tan honesto como la vida misma.

Esta es la historia de Lachan y Lucy y cómo la vida los unió. Lachan, debido a un escándalo volado de magnitudes, en su trabajo es obligado a tomarse unas vacaciones mientras la empresa para la cual trabaja decide cómo manejar el asunto y la imagen pública de ambos. A raíz de esto, Lachan decide hacer un viaje a Cascade Point, un pueblito donde pasó buena parte de su infancia y donde viven sus abuelos adoptivos y su hermano por parte de su papá.

Algo sucede en el camino y se encuentra, contra su voluntad, atrapado por una noche en un hotel viejo y polvoriento con Lucy, una mujer que usualmente es como un Golden retriever pero que acaba de pasar por una cita espantosa que la tiene fuera de su carácter usual.

Como no esperan volver a verse, Lachan no es muy abierto con sus sentimientos y Lucy necesita charlar para volver el tiempo más ameno, comienzan un juego de mentiras, es decir, se hacen preguntas que sólo pueden responder con una mentira. Así comienzan a conocerse, o no hacerlo, un poco más y se divierten mientras que esperan poder salir de esa situación.

Sin embargo, las cosas comienzan a cambiar, el viaje de Lachan se extiende y por fuerza mayor (no doy más detalles para no spoilear) Lucy termina teniendo que mudarse con él. Ahí comienza la aventura de averiguar si algo que comenzó como menos que una amistad puede convertirse en algo más y si se animarán a contarse sus verdades…

Amé esta historia y acá va el por qué:

1. Me gustó mucho el desarrollo de personaje de Lachan, realmente de a poco se va transformando, abriendo su corazón y reflexionando sobre su historia, su presente, qué quiere a futuro y la importancia de la familia, de la cual estaba tan alejado. Se sintió muy humano y real ver cómo alguien, después de años de sólo dedicarse al trabajo y a progresar económicamente, comienza a ver que hay algo más en la vida y actúa en consecuencia de ello.

2. El personaje de Lucy es adorable, realmente causa simpatía y el giro hacia el final demuestra también su propio crecimiento argumental. Me gusta cuando una historia va generando esas evoluciones en sus personajes.

3. Tiene partes realmente graciosas, en varios momentos me reí genuinamente.

4. No tiene escenas de intimidad sexual y sin embargo el romance y la tensión están ahí, pero sobre todo la ternura, la intimidad, la honestidad y apertura que requiere la construcción de un vínculo romántico se ven perfectamente reflejados.

5. Gracias al cielo, o a su autora jaja, no tiene momentos de peleas innecesarias de esas que a veces hacen que la trama pierda todo sentido o que los personajes se vuelvan odiosos o poco creíbles.

6. Se desarrolla a buen ritmo; está bien escrita, tiene buen uso del vocabulario.

Esta es la primer historia que leo de Sarah Jane Woodley y definitivamente me gustaría leer más de ella. Me alegra haber conocido su escritura. Y agradezco haber recibido una Copia Avanzada de Lectura (ARC por sus siglas en inglés).
