This is a demo project I created for a fictional gardening educator called Lily Greene from LilyGreeneGardens.com. She is a stay-at-home mom who has been gardening in raised beds for over a decade, sharing her insights as blog posts on her website.
Lily's following is mostly other stay-at-home moms who aspire to incorporate organic raised bed gardening into their lifestyle. To help these moms get closer to their dream, Lily has created a comprehensive guide to companion planting for pest control in organic raised bed gardening.
She wants to create this e-book as a $7 product, which she will use as a lead generation tool to get her ideal customer into an email sequence that sells her $497 course on raised bed gardening for beginners. The course naturally builds off of this e-book and goes into much more detail about being a raised bed organic gardener.
My job was to write the copy for the e-book and design it into a beautiful PDF download that she would sell on her website.
The Process
Since this was a demo project, I relied on trusty ole ChatGPT to handle 95% of the copywriting process.
Step 1: Generate Ideas
The first step was to prompt ChatGPT to generate the core idea for the e-book. The goal here was to narrow down to one specific subtopic under the broader umbrella of raised bed gardening for beginners so us to keep the e-book brief but jam-packed with value.
Step 2: Generate Headline
The next step was to generate the headline. Starting with the headline is important because it serves as to focus the entire e-book on one specific idea, much like a magnifying glass focuses sunlight down to one point.
Step 3: Create an outline
As a way to flesh out the idea, I used ChatGPT to first create an outline for the e-book. This allowed me to get an idea of how cohesive the final e-book would be.
Step 4: Draft the E-book
Working chapter by chapter, I had ChatGPT flesh the outline into the copy for the e-book. By focusing on just the introduction, I was able to hone in on the writing style I was looking for, which then allowed me to use one single prompt that worked well to generate the rest of the e-book copy.
Step 5: Editing
The next step was to copy the generated copy from ChatGPT into a Google Doc, which allowed me to see the entire e-book at once and edit it to better match what I was going for.
Click the link below to see the editing process. I've formatted a portion of it to show the process of editing, from removing any unnecessary information to allow for brevity and conciseness, to fixing tonality and word choice.
Keep in mind that I'm not a subject matter expert on the topic, and did not do any additional research to verify the information that ChatGPT provided since this was a sample project. These are, however, steps I do take with client work to ensure the best possible quality of copy.
Step 6: Designing
The next step in the creation process was designing the e-book into a beautifully formatted PDF. For client work, this step is preceded by a brand-guideline review to gather on-brand assets such as fonts, color HEX codes, graphics elements, photographs, and illustrations.
For this demo, however, I simply found a Canva template that suited this fictional client perfectly and proceeded to customize it to create the final e-book, keeping layout, fonts, colors, and photography style consistent throughout the design.
