City Exploration App — A New, Immersive Way to Discover Trips

Overview

The City Exploration Mobile App gives users a complete tool for exploring cities, with a focus on Indianapolis and its surrounding towns.
The app helps users discover local attractions such as parks, museums and architecture, create customized itineraries and explore neighborhoods, making it easier to plan a visit or a relocation.
Our goal was to create an immersive mobile app experience where users choose the places they want to see and the app turns them into a personalized, well-organized trip.

The Challenge

A travel planning app faces a complex problem: optimizing the route between the locations a user selects.
The challenge was to find the most efficient order for visiting places, considering not only the distances between them but also each location's operating hours and how convenient the route is for the user. The system also had to rebuild the route dynamically based on the user's current location, keeping track of which places were already visited and which were still ahead.

Our Approach

The project followed a clear timeline: kickoff, research, wireframing, design and handoff.
We started with a client briefing to capture the client's needs and goals, then moved into user experience research to understand users and test ideas. Next, we built the information architecture and user flow, from onboarding, sign-up and personalization to the main screen, catalog, trip page, landmark page and profile, and turned them into wireframes.
In the design stage, we created a design system and a high-fidelity prototype, followed by a structured handoff of specifications, assets and documentation to the development team.

UX/UI Design Solution

Smart Route Building

The route is shown as a vertical timeline with location points. The system analyzes the user's current location and selected places, arranges them in the best order and shows each stop's address, duration of stay and distance from the previous point. The total trip time and distance sit at the bottom of the screen, so users can quickly see the scale of their journey.

AI Trip Generator

Users describe how much time they have and which activities they prefer (for example, museums or galleries), add the locations they want to visit, and the AI generator builds the trip for them. Ready-made trips, local recommendations and exclusive offers add even more ways to plan.

Explore Cities & Landmarks

The main screen combines nearby places, popular landmarks, top-rated trips and cities. Each city page shows its unique locations, and each landmark page includes a description, opening details, transport options, distance and user reviews.

Catalog, Favorites & Profile

A catalog of saved locations lets users assemble a personalized trip at any time. The profile is the place for personal information and reminders, while a short tutorial explains how trip building works.

Outcome

The final design delivers an immersive city exploration app that turns a list of saved places into a smart, optimized trip in just a few taps.
A clear route timeline, AI-powered trip creation and detailed landmark pages make planning a visit or relocation simple, while the design system and handoff give the development team a solid foundation for implementation.
