Dairy Tour 360 — Virtual Farm Experience for DairyMAX

Client: DairyMAX — the nonprofit dairy council representing dairy farm families across Texas and the American Southwest, behind the consumer brand Better with Dairy.

The challenge

Most people will never stand inside a working dairy. School field trips don't scale: farms are biosecure workplaces, classes are hours away, and a bus full of fourth-graders is a disruption a milking operation can't absorb every week. DairyMAX wanted to flip the trip — bring the farm to the classroom, the kitchen and the couch, in one experience that works on a school smartboard, a phone and a VR headset without losing the feeling of actually standing on the farm.

What we built

An explorable virtual farm. The hub is a hand-illustrated aerial landscape of a real dairy operation where every building is a door: feed storage, cow housing, the milking barn, the milk truck on its route, and the crop circles that feed the herd. Visitors either wander freely or press Start video tour and get walked through the farm stop by stop — the mode a teacher runs on a classroom screen.
Each stop pairs two layers that do different jobs:
Immersive 360° video, filmed on a working dairy with ground rigs and drones, does the authenticity. Click-and-drag on desktop, touch on mobile, gyroscope in a headset — you look wherever you want while the tour plays.
The illustrated landscape does the navigation. Between videos you land back on the map, so you always know where you are on the farm — and fun-fact hotspots pop straight out of the scenery with real photos ("many dairies have automatic back scratchers for the cows").

The decisions that made it work

Illustration over a photoreal map. A drawn farm reads instantly at any screen size, keeps hotspots legible on a smartboard across a classroom, and sets a tone that welcomes a nine-year-old without patronizing an adult. The real photography lives inside the 360° scenes, where it carries the credibility — no CGI cows, no stock footage.
Two layers, kept strictly apart. The video does immersion, the illustration does orientation. Mixing them is how experiences like this become heavy and confusing; separating them keeps the mental model simple and the load manageable — the animated landscape streams behind a percent loader up front, so once you're inside, exploring never stutters.
One build, three contexts. The same React application serves the desktop experience, the mobile touch version and VR headsets — no separate "VR app" to maintain, no classroom edition to keep in sync.

Reach

Dairy Tour 360 was created so anyone, anywhere can visit a dairy — and through DairyMAX's collaboration with National Ag in the Classroom, the virtual farm reaches students across the country.
