Nuula: Making Financial Health Easier to Understand for Small Business Owners

Nuula is a mobile product designed to help small business owners understand and improve their financial health through a set of connected tools. The experience brings together credit health, cash flow visibility, financial reporting, business goals, onboarding, activation, and educational guidance into one clear mobile ecosystem. Our role was to translate complex financial data into simple, approachable product experiences that feel less like accounting software and more like a helpful business companion.

We designed Nuula to make financial clarity feel like a daily habit, not a monthly chore.

The onboarding flow introduces Nuula through bold visual storytelling and concise value-led messaging. Instead of overwhelming new users with product details, we focused on showing the core promise quickly—cash flow visibility, credit monitoring, and business performance tracking in one place. The final screen then moves users cleanly into account creation or login, creating a clearer first impression, faster product understanding, and less friction at the start of the journey.

A strong onboarding flow helped position Nuula as a simple business companion—not another intimidating finance app.

This set focuses on activation and personalization. We designed a tool-selection screen that helps users choose the products most relevant to their business, then followed it with product detail screens that explain value, build trust, and reduce hesitation before setup. The Plaid connection modal adds an important reassurance layer around security and data handling, helping transform a potentially risky moment into one that feels transparent and credible. The result is better activation clarity, stronger trust, and a smoother path into high-value tools.

The interface teaches the product while the user is already using it.

The biometric enablement screen is designed to feel simple and non-threatening, while the tooltip-based walkthrough helps users understand how active and inactive tools work, what each card represents, and where to go next. Rather than pushing people into the product and hoping they figure it out, we used contextual onboarding to make learning part of the interface itself. This creates higher confidence for first-time users and a more self-explanatory product experience.
We designed the insights and content layer of the product—combining daily tips, educational articles, and member success stories inside the app. These screens help Nuula feel proactive rather than passive by turning financial tools into a more guided experience with encouragement, proof, and practical next steps.
Instead of showing metrics alone, the product also explains why they matter and what users should do next. This supports better engagement, stronger feature discovery, and more persuasive activation of additional tools.
We designed a credit score screen that combines score status, progress tracking, and long-term history with practical goals users can work toward. Alongside it, the More hub creates a clean, structured place for personal profile, business profile, settings, legal, and metrics, while the goals screen helps break financial improvement into smaller, trackable milestones. Together, these screens create a stronger sense of progress, clearer self-management, and more motivation to keep engaging with the product over time.

We extended Nuula from an app into a daily touchpoint.

Nuula was also explored as a product that could live beyond the app through home screen widgets and glanceable surfaces. These concepts bring business health and score visibility into the user’s daily device habits, making Nuula feel more present, ambient, and useful without requiring a full app session every time.
Designing for both iOS and Android helped show how the product could stay recognizable across platforms while adapting to different visual environments. The value here is quicker check-ins, higher product visibility, and a more habit-forming user experience.
Business Credit Health was designed to make score monitoring feel understandable and less intimidating, while the Financial Health views turn year-over-year comparisons, profit and loss summaries, revenue, expenses, and receivables/payables into a more digestible mobile reporting experience.
The challenge was translating dense financial information into layouts that are easy to scan on a small screen without losing decision-making value.
This resulted in clearer financial storytelling, better scanability, and more confidence for non-expert users reviewing business performance.
The Cash Flow Health experience was built to help users understand how money moves across accounts and where future problems may appear. We combined balance summaries, inflow and outflow comparisons, account-level states, forecasting, and projected shortfall warnings into a flow that feels lightweight but highly actionable.
By showing both current status and future risk, the product helps users plan ahead instead of reacting too late. This created stronger financial awareness, earlier visibility into shortfalls, and more actionable cash flow decision-making.

Cash flow became something users could monitor proactively—not just review after problems appear.

Outcome

Across the project, we shaped a financial product that feels calmer, clearer, and far more mobile-native than traditional finance tools. By combining dashboards, activation flows, widgets, goals, and guided insights, Nuula becomes more than a reporting app—it becomes a product that helps users understand their business faster, take action sooner, and feel more in control of their financial health.

Complex financial information became a product experience that feels simple, supportive, and actionable.
