Apex - A decentralized gadget based e-commerce mobile app

Role: Product Designer (end‑to‑end) Timeline: June 2025 – July 2025 Platforms: iOS Core: Realistic, instant product purchase My remit: Research → UX strategy → UI & prototyping → Design system → Handoff & QA.

Context & Problem

Despite the growing popularity of cryptocurrency, it remains difficult for the average consumer to find a convenient and user-friendly way to purchase goods and services using digital currency.

Opportunity

Deliver an app that will allow users to browse a selection of products, complete transactions using their preferred cryptocurrency, and track the status of their orders. Overall, the Apex app aims to increase the accessibility and ease of use of cryptocurrency for everyday purchases and also the daily crypto asset - local currency exchange scams that happen in the crypto word by eradicating the need to have to change your asset to local currency before been able to purchase gadgets thereby making it a more viable alternative to traditional payment methods.

Product Goals:

The Apex app aims to deliver an intuitive, user-friendly shopping experience that allows users to browse and purchase products directly with cryptocurrency—eliminating the need for currency conversion, preventing exchange scams through secure wallet-to-merchant payments, simplifying complex blockchain interactions, and increasing accessibility for non-technical users—ultimately building trust, enhancing security, and positioning cryptocurrency as a viable, modern alternative to traditional payment methods while supporting mainstream adoption through familiar e-commerce patterns

Key success metrics (KPIs):

Conversion Rate – Percentage of users who complete purchases using cryptocurrency.
Transaction Success Rate – Ratio of successful wallet-to-merchant payments.
Average Transaction Time – Speed from checkout to confirmed payment.
User Retention Rate – Frequency of repeat crypto purchases.
Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT) – User feedback on ease, trust, and overall experience

Users & Insights

Crypto shoppers: want a simple, secure way to spend their crypto on everyday products without converting to cash.
New crypto users: seek clarity and confidence when making their first crypto payments.
Tech-savvy buyers: value fast transactions, real-time tracking, and control over their digital assets.
Merchants: need a trusted system that accepts crypto payments without added complexity or risk.
Insight: users want crypto shopping to feel as effortless and reliable as traditional e-commerce—simple flows, instant confirmation, and zero exchange hassles

Design principles

Seamless checkout: crypto payments are fast and effortless. No complicated steps.
Transparent pricing: users see exact costs in crypto and local currency. No hidden fees.
Visual clarity: gadgets are showcased with clear images and details. No confusion.
Secure trust: transactions and data are protected end-to-end. No worry about hacks.
Accessible navigation: every screen is easy to use on mobile. No dead ends.

Pain points discovered

Try‑on tools often look filter‑fake or wash out deeper tones.
Too many controls up front cause abandonment.
Gating everything before a first good result kills trust.
Difficulty in finding a platform that allows him to purchase gadgets using crypto
Concerns about the security of his crypto investments during transactions
Inability to find the latest gadgets in one place
Finding a platform that offers a wide range of gadgets at competitive prices
Hassle of converting cryptocurrency to fiat currency before making purchases
Concerns about end-to-end encryption on crypto  transactions.

Core Features

1) Checkout

Delivery screen ensures clarity: "Delivery Info Confirmed. Your order's total price is locked in ETH. No hidden charges or volatile fiat conversions
Order Confirmation screen affirms: Hey Adam, Thank you for your purchase. Your digital asset was securely transferred and your order is confirmed. View Order

2) Product page

Description screen assures quality: "Description Details. We provide full, verified product information—know exactly what you're buying with your crypto."
Reviews screen encourages social proof: "Customer Reviews. Verified buyers share their experience, assuring you of the product quality before you commit your ETH."
Specifications screen validates features: "Detailed Specifications. All performance and technical specs are listed. The product's value justifies the ETH price

3) Other pages

Saved" Item Management: "Item Added to Saved. You have full control over your list. The ETH price is saved for later when you're ready to buy.
Item Removal Assurance: "Swipe to Remove. No pressure to buy. Easily manage your wishlist and return when the time is right.
Live Order Tracking Visibility: "Driver on the Way (Wilson). We provide real-time location and driver details. Your secure, crypto-paid order is fully trackable.
Delivery ETA Confirmation: "Order AB-147, ETA 2-3hrs. Know exactly when to expect your delivery. Your purchase is secure and accounted for until it reaches you.

Monetization & Paywall

Apex generates revenue through a commission on each purchase made via the platform

Design System

Type: Refined display SF pro display Color:
Deep plum acts as the primary brand color for Calls-to-Action (like "Shop now") and active navigation elements, guiding the user and signifying brand focus.
Soft blush neutrals (white/light gray) provide a clean, high-contrast background for all content, making product images and text easily scannable.
Accessible contrast ramps are ensured by using black text against the light background, optimizing readability for prices (e.g., 0.52 ETH) and descriptions.
The use of the brand-focused purple in the large promotion banner functions as a clear, positive semantic state, immediately drawing attention to a successful deal
Key UX Decisions & Iterations
Dynamic product screen: enabled users to instantly preview how selected properties (like color, storage, or model) affect price and availability, improving decision confidence
Unified checkout: merged multiple steps into a single, intuitive screen showing payment, shipping, and crypto details, improving conversion rates

Outcomes (so far)

High-fidelity mobile prototype: a seamless end-to-end flow from gadget discovery to crypto checkout, crafted to feel familiar to e-commerce users yet powered by Web3 logic
Component system: reusable UI kit built for scalability, consistent visuals, clear states, and flexible crypto wallet modules
Crypto payment experience: add-on flow designed as a trust-builder, not a barrier, integrates wallet connection, price conversion, and transaction tracking in one intuitive step
Delivery & tracking layer: in-app driver call and live status updates, transparency that strengthens reliability without adding friction

Usability testing

To ensure that the product is usable by users, the prototype was sent to 5 users to test at different levels such as onboarding, adding items to cart, connecting wallet, checkout, tracking and general navigation through the app.
Onboarding Testing resulted that users were able get their account onboard under 1 minute which is ideal for such an app.
Adding items to cart Because of the minimalistic user interface design, users were able to view their desired item and add them to cart with no stress as aimed by the team.
Connecting Wallet Since individual is allowed to connect different wallet to make payment, connecting the wallet to their account was also tested to ensure that the process is seamless and users were able to perform this action under 45 seconds.
Checkout Users gave accolade for the easy checkout process as it took them less than 2 minutes to glance through product and checkout making Apex one of the fastest app in town .
Tracking and General Navigation According to users, navigating through the app was seamless and their experience on it was a smooth one. The tracking features that was incorporated in the app enable users to have a peace of mind as they were able to see and monitor the movement of their product.

Designing for accesibility

All color used in across the app are AAA Compliant which make it usable for anyone anywhere regardless of the state of their eyes and without sacrificing their eyes to use the app.

Future Steps
Crypto wallet integrations: expand beyond core wallets (e.g., MetaMask, Coinbase) to include multi-chain and hardware wallet support
Loyalty & rewards program: introduce cashback or point systems for frequent crypto shoppers to drive retention
Personalized recommendations: leverage browsing and purchase data to surface gadgets users are likely to buy next
Accessibility & localization: optimize UI for global users — multilingual support, region-specific currencies, and dark mode refinements
Reflection Making it possible for users to make direct crypto payments when purchasing gadgets is seen as a huge success and a way to encourage individuals to trade crypto currencies. It is also proposed that the market expand beyond gadgets, to include other e-commerce-related products as the market grows. Aside from this mobile application, it is recommended that a website be designed in order to showcase the product's maximum manifestation.
