Overview

I was tasked with creating a visual design identity for Climate Designer’s new podcast, Doom & Bloom. At the intersection of climate and design, the visual identity needed to stand out and communicate the values of the podcast to their intended audience. This was a bold brand concept, different than all their competitors as was requested to not include typical nature imagery. The client also wanted the content to be very dynamic, including different colors and imagery for each episode.

As this was a remote project, I used many collaborative tools to ensure effective communication and success.

The Team

I am one of four people on the Doom and Bloom podcast team. My role is as the visual designer and I assist with producing the podcast. The team provides me with feedback I use to shape the design identity. We also have the podcast host, our technician, and our other producer.

Results

The Logo

The podcast is part of the Climate Designers Ecosystem. To show the relation between the two, we used the standard font of the organization and a simple lockup that can easily be used on a variety of collateral.

The Color Palette

Climate Designers aims to move away from the typical branding seen in the climate space (blues and greens) and the podcast was to follow suit. We chose a palette of bright colors to speak to the “bloom” portion of the title, while remaining consistent with Climate Designers branding. These colors would be later contrasted with darker ones to speak to the “doom” portion of the title.

General Podcast Imagery

This project involved two different sets of assets. One for the general podcast that could be used to promote the show, independent of the episodes, and the other for episode specific content. The general assets needed to communicate the overall theme of the podcast to the target audience, designers. To do this I incorporated the bright colors in contrast with dreary colors, along with some nods to design through design tool imagery.

Episode Specific Imagery

In addition to assets for the podcast itself, Doom and Bloom also needs assets for each specific episode to promote it on social media, their website, and podcast platforms. Each episode is given a color from the palette (i.e. Episode one is all blue). Each asset’s imagery is customized to what was discussed in the podcast episode.

Assets for the Website

In addition to designing for social and podcast platforms, I was also tasked to design assets for the website. This included the hero banner, imagery for episodes, and concept collages for the overall podcast. (Note: I did not design the webpage itself.)
