My Top 5 Hikes Near Auckland Hi, I’m Alicia, a 32 year old outdoor enthusiast from Vancouver, Canada. Being the thrill seeker that I am, I knew that New Zealand was at the top of my list for places to live at least once in my life and now I’ve been living in Auckland for 3 years and I can safely say this place is my second home.  Hiking in Auckland? No way. Way! Auckland is a big city and you may not think about it for its hiking potential but trust me when I say there are some incredible hikes in and around the city. Even in  the city there are so many great mounts to climb (small as they may be). In my 3 years here I’ve done quite a few of them, so here are my top 5 favourite hikes in Auckland. Duder Regional Park Sheep. Need I say more? There are so many fluffy little pals on this hike I had cuteness overload. Duder Park, located in Clevedon, boasts panoramic views of the Hunua Ranges and Hauraki Gulf island, and makes you feel like you’re on your very own island. The views are incredible with crystal blue water and rolling green hills. The trail is a loop that has an elevation gain of 567 ft., is about 6.5kms, and takes around 1.5-2 hours to complete. I definitely recommend wearing your sunscreen and a hat as there isn’t a lot of shade along the way.  Duder has lots of picnic tables so if you want to pack a lunch and take in the gorgeous views, I’d highly recommend it. Mercer Bay Loop This stunning walk located in the Waitākere Ranges is a must do. This was the first hike I did when I came to Auckland and WOW it did not disappoint.  A pretty easy walk, this one takes about less than an hour to complete (though you might want to take more time to stop and admire the beautiful black sand beaches).  This incredible coastal hike has a good amount of sun and shade which is great on a hot day. On the sea view section of the walk, not only do you get the breathtaking views, it also leads you to a Maori Sculpture — named Te Kawerau a Maki This incredible coastal hike has a good amount of sun and shade which is great on a hot day. On the sea view section of the walk, not only do you get the breathtaking views, it also leads you to a Maori Sculpture — named Te Kawerau a Maki Pou.  A couple PSAs: the track begins in the carpark which is located at the end of Te Ahua Road. Also, there are no fences or barriers along the track so be extra careful as this walk is beside some pretty steep (200m high) cliffs. I can safely say this is one of my favourite walks and is where I take anyone who’s just landed in NZ and wants to see some beautiful scenery while not straining their jetlagged selves. Omanawanui Track This is another incredible walk located in Waitākere Ranges Park. Fair warning, this hike has about 2400 steps but I promise you the views are worth it. There are 360 views of the ocean that are honestly jaw dropping. You have a couple of options with this one — you can return the way you came or there is a longer loop via Whatipu Road (access to this has a bit of a narrow gravel road at the end, for about 5kms). You can also stay at the campgrounds here, just note you do need a reservation for this. Hunua Falls Trail Another relatively easy one, this hike takes about half an hour to an hour. Hunua Falls Park is a very family friendly park that has lots of picnic tables and some pretty amazing views.  A plus to this walk is its dog friendly (on a leash), so not only do you get to see the beautiful waterfall, you also might see some super cute puppies. There are also lots of ducks around (I don’t know if you can tell, but I love animals).  You make your way up from the Wairoa River through the forest which boasts beautiful fern trees — bonus points if you can spot a silver fern! This track is along a shady stream and arrives at a pretty cool lookout where you can see the falls in full form.  Though swimming is not recommended, you can still sit by the falls and enjoy the view. The waterfall itself is about 30 metres high and is absolutely incredible.  Kauri Glen Reserve If you’re looking for a super easy, quick walk, the Kauri Glen Path (near Birkenhead), is perfect. This track takes only 20 mins to complete but don’t be fooled by the short time, it’s still a really cool one to do with some stunning views. Another dog friendly route that’s popular with walkers and runners; this track shows off one of Auckland’s densest forests with the beautiful Kauri trees (some being up to 400 years old!!). The boardwalk along this trail is 18 metres above ground, making for some really incredible forest views. This walk was super peaceful (although it can get quite crowded), and I especially enjoyed how cool the new boardwalk was. So, if you’re looking for some really cool walks there really isn't a shortage near  Auckland. Just grab a friend, grab a hat (and sunscreen) and make your way to one of these incredible trails, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
