So the whole design community, the brand world is buzzing since yesterday with this new brand refresh for Instagram. The whole community is mixed out with its pov and thats what happens when a popular brand with massive brand image goes out with a new face.
I had some thoughts on that as well.. I loved how “It’s Nice That” sat with the creative director and director of brand design and explored this whole reincarnation of Instagram. That way, I could also understand the brand’s point of view before forcing my reactions..
Honestly, I like it.. It’s growing over me.. Reminded me of how the whole design community reacted when Instagram brought that gradient and minimal icon back a decade ago, and everyone lost their shit, but nearly a couple of months, everyone started enjoying that, and that became a trendsetter.
Now let past be past.. We talk about today.. I like this subtle new logotype and the big picture I feel is that its growing up, and not getting boring.. The platform is no longer just a simple photo app (though I miss that one). It’s a massive, chaotic mix of ad campaigns, photo dumps and a place of meme economy. The rebrand reflects this shift. They moved away from a singular mood to a system that acts like a well designed sketchbook and the whole idea, the entire goal is to celebrate the messy act of making, rather than just a polished final post.
The entire philosophy behind this refresh is extreme restraint, where the brand dont wanna be the main character anymore. They built it as a quiet, confident foundational canvas so the creators can take the spotlight..
But overall, its worth a read, this article by INT that I’m certainly gonna link it below.. I feel now its not the "first impression as last" but its more about what a brand story talks about.. how they work, not just how they look or how they feel..
