Why Character Consistency Matters in a Children’s Book
One of the biggest problems in children’s book illustration is having a character look different from page to page.
The hairstyle changes.
The clothes change.
The face feels different.
Even the character’s personality can start to disappear.
For a good picture book, children should recognize the same character immediately, whether they are happy, sad, excited, scared, or surprised.
That’s why I develop characters carefully before moving into the full illustrations. I focus on their appearance, expressions, poses, clothing, and small details that make them recognizable throughout the story.
