CIFRASZÉK
Chair Redesign for BALATON BÚTOR
Cifraszék is a redesign of the Veszprém chair for Balaton Bútor, inspired by the visual language and structural details of the traditional Bakonyi Cifraszűr.
The project translates regional folk heritage into a contemporary furniture object through form, proportion and colour.
Research & Inspiration
The project began with research into Balaton Bútor’s manufacturing heritage and the visual culture of the Balaton Uplands and Bakony region.
In the cifraszűr, ornament is closely connected to construction: seams, layered hems, appliqué and embroidery emphasise the shape of the garment. This relationship between structure and decoration became the central design principle.
Form Development
The broad, curved backrest refers to the coat’s distinctive collar and creates a wrapping, almost wearable character.
The angled legs and trapezoidal negative spaces echo the flared panels of the garment, while the stretchers reinterpret its layered lower edge.
Through iterative sketching, the original references were reduced to a small set of formal elements: width, angle, curvature and rhythm.
Material & Colour
Oak connects the chair to Balaton Bútor’s woodworking tradition and the forests surrounding Veszprém.
The black structure is accented by a red line running along the seat and backrest, referencing the embroidered edging of the cifraszűr.
