Richard has been a freelance writer since 1986. From 1999-2010 he was East Coast Editor for Vineyard & Winery Management, where he also wrote a regular column, East Coast Watch, and edited the news section and the work of other columnists.

In 2012 his book "Beyond Jefferson's Vines: the Evolution of Quality Wine in Virginia" was published by Sterling Epicure, and was later re-issued in the author's own second and third editions in 2014 and 2020. Also in 2020, he published "Honest Christianity for America Today".

Since 2012 he has been Conference Manager of the Eastern Winery Exposition. He has chosen the speakers and topics, written seminar descripitions, and managed the event onsite.
