Role: Senior Designer, Stratosphere Digital Responsible for end-to-end UI/UX
SIRUM.org is a company dedicated to reducing medical waste by repacking and donating unused medications from one medical facility to another in need, lowering costs and stress for patients of all kinds.
My job was to help them build out a new enterprise suite of apps to modernize their company's operations.
Getting started on the right foot
SIRUM knew they wanted a lightweight and easy to use design system
... but they weren’t sure how to get there. They were caught up in the decision–making process instead of exploring and trying out their different options. That’s where our design team came in.
The core components that make up the UIs and design system we delivered
Designing the building blocks
We created our table cells first, then reused them for larger components
Starting with the base design system from Tailwind, we focused on getting the client’s data tables down pat. Then, we reused those smaller components to build our larger components for outside the table.
Note: screenshot uses dummy table data for HIPAA compliance
Understanding the donation system
At the time, they were managing donations with a spreadsheet
The spreadsheet worked, but there were some issues:
actions that affected other departments needed more friction
spreadsheet was overwhelming
filtering information was difficult
Replacing the spreadsheet
We kept the table but made it much smarter
To make the tables more useful, we pared the information down to the bare minimum and tucked away all the other information and actions into a sidepanel.
Auditing the inventory app
Identifying the goals for our new version
They already had an inventory application, but it needed a lot of updates so they could maximize the potential of their new equipment as well as reduce the time it took to make any changes to their inventory.
Modernizing the inventory system
Optimizing for the future upgrades without abandoning the current systems
We rethought their inventory system to include upgrades like barcode scanning on mobile, bulk edits, and other time-savers.
Auditing the med picking app
Identifying areas for improvement
The app they built for finding medications in their inventory to put into donations was outdated and needed some work to make it quicker to use.
Rethinking the picking app
Smoothing out their processes
We updated their mobile picking app to improve the following processes:
account switching/sign-in
barcode scanning
tracking item movements
multi-selection
label printing
Brainstorming the donor portal
Understanding their customer needs
Currently, the donors and all of their donation pickups, supply requests, and contact information were being managed manually via email and spreadsheets.
Their customers wanted to be able to manage these things themselves – a win-win for them and SIRUM.
Creating the donor portal
Delivering an easier way to manage their clients
We created a website that allows SIRUM and donor partners to:
Order supply requests (and set up recurring ones)
Arrange donation pickups (and set recurring ones)
Manage donation records and documents
Edit user settings
Understanding the drug management system
Learning about their current system to help us modernize it
Their current Drug UI was laggy and needed several changes, like:
cumbersome processes for editing drug prices, generic drug replacements, and more
it was difficult to find specific info, or look into related drugs
Modernizing the Drug UI
Smoothing out the database experience
We focused on the following quality-of-life upgrades:
Flexible and easy-to-use filters
Different table views for different types of Drug information
Keyboard-only editing abilities, reducing clicks
What I would have measured
I didn't have the opportunity to gather any analytics on this project, but if I could've, here's what I would've measured:
Changes in donation volume
Changes in sorting/picking time
Changes in donation regularity
Supply requests made in Donor Portal

We delivered internal desktop and mobile apps, as well as a customer-facing website to modernize SIRUM's internal processes.
