Naija Exam Mobile Application - Redesign

Naija Exams is an exam preparation app built for Nigerian students preparing for JAMB, WAEC, NECO, Post-UTME, NABTEB, NDA, Job exams, and more. It provides real practice questions, exam simulations, flashcards, and performance insights to help students study effectively, track their progress, and prepare with confidence.

Role : Product Designer Platform : IOS & Android Design Duration: 2 weeks Live Mobile App : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/naijaexams-limited/id6754071065

Redesign Overview The Old Experience

The existing app provided access to exam questions and preparation resources, but the overall experience felt outdated and lacked a clear, structured learning journey. Key features were difficult to discover, the interface lacked visual consistency, and there was limited feedback to help students understand their progress and areas for improvement.
Why the Redesign? The redesign focused on transforming Naija Exams from a question bank into a clearer, more engaging, and more personalized exam-preparation experience making it easier for students and general users to find what they need, study effectively, and track their readiness.

Challenges

Retaining existing content: Preserve the core content and features users already rely on while introducing a more modern interface.
Maintaining familiarity: Ensure existing users can easily recognize and navigate familiar sections despite the changes in layout and structure.
Improving without overwhelming: Introduce new improvements without making the redesigned experience feel completely unfamiliar.
Restructuring existing flows: Reorganize content and navigation for better usability while keeping the original functionality accessible.
Balancing old and new: Find the right balance between improving the experience and maintaining the familiarity that existing users are accustomed to.

My Approach:

I took a progressive redesign approach retaining the app’s core functionality, content, and familiar user flows while introducing a cleaner UI, clearer navigation, and more intuitive interactions. I also conducted competitor analysis to understand how existing exam-preparation products structure their experiences and identify opportunities to improve Naija Exams. The goal was to modernize the experience without making existing users feel lost.

Onboarding Experience Redesign

The old onboarding felt visually outdated and lacked a clear flow, making the first interaction with the app feel less engaging. The redesign introduced a cleaner visual system, stronger hierarchy, and a more intentional onboarding journey while keeping the essential information and functionality familiar to existing users.

Registration Screens

The old app lacked a clear registration path for users to set up and tailor their experience. The redesign introduced a 3-step progressive disclosure flow, gradually collecting key user information, exam preferences, and study goals without overwhelming users upfront.

Homepage Redesign

From a cluttered homepage to a focused two-screen experience.
The full subject view was separated from the homepage, allowing the homepage to serve as a quick overview of the user’s learning activity— streaks, recent tests, and ongoing sessions. Streaks was also introduced as a gamification element to encourage consistent daily study and keep users engaged.

Questions Selection

From a rigid start to a more flexible test setup.
The redesign gives users control over how many questions they want to attempt before starting a test, making the experience more flexible and better suited to their available time, questions and study goals.

Test Results - Redesign

From simply showing a score to helping users understand their performance.
The redesigned results screen gives users a clearer breakdown of their score, accuracy, performance, and areas for improvement, helping them understand what they got wrong and what to focus on next.

Three Study Modes

Test Simulation : Experience exam conditions with timed questions designed to mirror the real test environment.
Practice Session : Learn at your own pace with instant feedback and detailed explanations to strengthen your understanding.
Flashcards : Quickly revise key concepts and reinforce what you’ve learned with focused, bite-sized questions.
Each study mode is peculiar to helping users practice effectively in different mode of questioning .

Readiness Overview Feature

To make users understand and track how much prepared they are ,the Overview screen was introduced to the redesign . It brings together subject performance, accuracy, progress, and exam readiness to help users identify strengths, spot areas for improvement, and study with more direction.

Final Outcome

The redesign transformed Naija Exams into a cleaner, more structured product while retaining the content and functionality familiar to existing users. The new experience makes it easier to discover, study, track progress, and understand exam readiness.

Takeaways

This project reinforced the importance of redesigning with context, not just aesthetics. I learned how to modernize an existing product while respecting established user behaviour, simplifying complex flows, and introducing new experiences without disrupting familiarity.

The redesign was more than a visual refresh. It focused on tailoring the product to its audience, creating a more relevant and engaging experience, and positioning Naija Exams to stand out from competitors, drive user retention, and encourage long-term engagement.
