Any work that creates change is in reality a project, so people working in many different environments are undertaking project work without knowing it. They often don't have formal project management training to guide them on the best way to undertake their work.

The Situation

Gail is a website designer and she was having issues with clients who were creating a lot of rework for her. They would ask for a site to be created and she thought they were clear in what they wanted, so she would start her work, only to find when she presented it to them that they weren't happy. She was having to rework a lot of the sites she created, which was costing her money and time. Not to mention creating a lot of stress.

How We Worked Together

We started by reviewing Gail's situation and the things causing her the most trouble. I then provided her with project management training and templates, explaining the importance of documenting the expectations up front. I provided her with a one page project agreement template that she then used to gather the clients wishes, expectations and time constraints. This helped her create clarity up front, not only for herself, but also for the client. It meant she could ask questions that she hadn't been to be very clear on what the client wanted.

The Outcome

After using the templates I provided for her following three clients, the feedback was that it made her whole life a lot easier. She knew straight up what the client was expecting and if that was something unreasonable, that could be discussed with them before work started. She found that she wasn't doing anywhere near the amount of re-work either. Gail also found herself to be less stressed and commented on that.
