Social Impact Editorials for DoSomething.org

Case Study: Content Writing for DoSomething.org

DoSomething.org is one of the largest non-profit organizations for young people in the world. For over two years, I worked closely with DoSomething to create content that spoke to the concerns of Gen-Z and Gen Alpha members. I wrote two weekly email newsletters, dozens of editorial pieces, press releases, and web content. Then, I helped them revamp their language for a new website launch in 2024 by updating their writing guidelines and editing their web content.
Here, I'll break down each type of content, along with my process and examples.

Editorial Content

I was tasked with creating member-facing editorial content for their Gen-Z audience. My editorials hit crucial impact areas such as climate change, mental health, STEM equity, and more.

Check out this editorial I wrote:

To make sure my editorials are well-suited to the DoSomething audience, my writing:
Adapts the DoSomething voice, which is witty, informative, compassionate, and youthful.
Presents facts in digestible pieces that make our readers want to engage with the organization's programming.
Meets the moment with language that expresses solidarity, understanding, and hope.

Weekly Newsletters: The Breakdown & WYD

Each week, DoSomething sends out two newsletters to its members. WYD (What You're Doing) is a weekly update on what members have been up to. It celebrates the wins of young people around the world while raising awareness about key issues.
Here's a peek at WYD:
The Breakdown is similar to WYD in its mission to inform, but it takes a deeper dive into current issues. Each edition zooms in to break down a timely topic, and the end goal is to engage members in a DoSomething campaign.
Here's a snippet of The Breakdown:

Tone of Voice Development

As a youth-centered organization, it's important that DoSomething updates its tone of voice regularly to stay relevant to its audience. Beyond identifying Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha slang and using it properly, DoSomething also aims to remain culturally and socially conscious in its written communications. Its members trust DoSomething to lead the way with language that meets the moment.
I didn't have to reinvent the wheel with this project, only update some key areas of DoSomething's writing guidelines.

New Website Content Writing and Editing

In 2024, DoSomething revamped its website and asked for my help. I collaborated with its communications team to write new content and edit existing content to reflect a new, more personalized direction. My work on this project involved meeting tight character limits, reimagining old headlines to reflect new priorities, and reworking long-form content with said priorities in mind.
