Language Learning App — Onboarding Experience
The goal of this project was to design an engaging onboarding flow for a language learning app that personalizes the user journey right from the start. The key focus was on helping learners identify their goals, whether for travel, school, work, or personal growth so the app could tailor the experience to their needs.
I began with research into user motivation, studying how different learners approach language study. The insight was clear: motivation drives consistency, and tailoring the experience increases retention. This became the foundation for the onboarding design.
The onboarding flow was designed to feel welcoming yet purposeful. Users are guided through simple, visually engaging steps where they select their primary reason for learning, travel, school, work, cultural interest, or personal enrichment. Each choice connects to a tailored learning path, recommended exercises, and progress milestones.
The design emphasized clarity and ease of use, with large interactive cards, supportive visuals, and minimal text. I kept the flow short and lightweight to avoid drop-offs, while ensuring that each screen added value to the setup process.
Once the reason is selected, the app adapts the dashboard to display relevant progress trackers, personalized daily goals, and course suggestions. For example, a user choosing “travel” would see phrases and scenarios geared toward trips abroad, while someone learning for “work” would find professional vocabulary and workplace simulations.
The result is an onboarding experience that feels personal, motivating, and user-friendly. By aligning the app with each learner’s unique goals, the design fosters deeper engagement and long-term commitment to language learning.
Designing with empathy means understanding user intent. I recently designed a simple onboarding screen for a language learning app where users pick their reason for learning a new language — whether it’s for travel, school, career, or just for fun. A small detail, but it makes the experience more human-centered.
