I Am Worthy! 5 Tips to Building Your Self-Worth
Here’s a question coming in hot for you: Why is it so easy to point out everyone else’s good qualities and so hard to say good things about ourselves?
We might not be able to answer it exactly, but there are a few suggestions as to why it might be.
We are uncomfortable receiving compliments, especially from ourselves.
We are constantly comparing ourselves to others who are “better.”
We don’t think we are worthy of the nice words.
Let’s slow down a second because I want to remind you that you are worthy, you are loved, and you are beautifully you.
It might seem hard to believe this now, but here are a few tips and tricks that you can use daily to help build your belief in yourself and your self-worth.
Alter the way you speak to yourself
We like to be the first to criticize ourselves and one way to build our self-worth is by changing the narrative. You don’t have to talk to yourself negatively all of the time. Holding yourself accountable is an entirely different subject, but give yourself grace and acknowledge all of the good that you do!
2. Try doing things you enjoy
Do you ever feel happy or proud of yourself when you succeed at something that brings you happiness? Try finding more things you enjoy, or try something new. Stepping back and recognizing all of the different things you are good at can help you to feel better about yourself. When you do something well, take note of it!
3. Evaluate your peer group
If all you are hearing from other people are the things you are “bad” at, you might be more likely to start believing them. Take some time to see how your friends and peers are treating you. Remember: true friends are the ones who lift you up, not knock you down. Surround yourself with others who appreciate you and you might start to believe them.
4. Not everything will go how you plan or expect it to
Sometimes you can try your best and still have things not go how you wanted. That is 100% normal. Not every person is good at everything they do. Try accepting that you tried to the best of your abilities. Find a sense of pride in doing as much as you could. Take a moment to thank yourself for what you accomplished.
5. Volunteer and help others
Lending a helping hand builds your self-worth. When you are able to help someone else succeed or figure out a problem, you might feel a sense of pride in yourself for being able to make a difference. When we are continuously kind to others, saying nice things starts to come easier, especially to ourselves.
