Remember the days when we were taught to find a makeup brand and stick with it- as in brand loyalty? Well those days don’t really exist anymore, and while I too have products I’m ride or die for, I love to change products every now and then. I keep a steady rotation of Fenty, Too Faced, Smashbox, and Nars as my go to foundations, but trying a new product is always a blast. And I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing like unboxing a new foundation and doing a “reveal” as if I’m doing a Tiktok. “Guys, WOW! This is SO amazing” as it drips down my face.
Let’s get into the 4 Reasons to Change Your Foundation!
1. Patchy Foundation!
One thing I can’t stand is when foundation is patchy around the corners of my nose or my undereyes! The worst part is I usually don’t catch it until the concealer is put on. It seems the number one culprit for this is the bases of foundations and concealers not being the same
So say you have a water based foundation (example: Rare Beauty) and you're using a silicon concealer (example: Nars concealer) while these two products are fantastic, together they won’t work. A quick google search can help figure this out, or even a trip to the beauty store. I happen to have hollow and dark under eyes, so finding a concealer that works is a bit more important than foundation for me, but at the end of the day it’s the foundation that makes or breaks the look.
2. The Different Seasons
The usual beauty trend of Spring and Summer is dewy, sunkissed looks, and Autumn and Winter are Matte and Full Beat looks. I always make sure I adhere to the seasonal vibe I’m trying to achieve and am quick to get the right foundation. I love NARS Light Reflecting Foundation in the Summer, and Fenty Pro Soft Matte Foundation (the first foundation that actually complimented my olive undertones!) in the Winter. I also really love powder foundations in the Winter, and Spring, Estee Lauder as a great one that I keep on the foundation roster.
3. Your Skin Type Has Changed
Depending on my water intake and other health factors, my skin is either really oily, or really dry. I used to only get products that worked for oily skin, as for the longest time, I had such oily skin, especially my forehead. Now, I love combination skin foundation which works well with my Laneige Cream Skin Toner. But, keeping foundations that cater to these factors is super important for me. You’ll never catch this face lacking, that’s for sure. I love when foundation has a skin-like finish (Ex. Huda Beauty Easy Blur) but to achieve this and to last on the skin all day, making sure it matches the skin time is extremely important and I don’t think many realize this.
4. New Trends
I’m not saying going on beauty hauls every week is realistic or following Tiktok trends every time a new foundation comes out and buying the entire collection (most influencers get sent these items, let us remember that!), but it’s completely okay to be curious and excited about the hype of a new product. When the KVD Good Apple Balm Foundation was all over my FYP on both Instagram and Tiktok, although I didn’t need it, the way their eyes would light up when they’d put the product on made me want to experience that for myself. Excitement and joy are important emotions and finding them in makeup is totally okay! And if you don’t like it, keep it anyway! Eventually you’ll find your way to it, and might find you do in fact like it (this happens particularly with eyeshadow palettes for me!) Hype in new trends are usually for a reason, and why miss out on the fun if you can afford a little treat for yourself. If I were you, I’d take a step into the wild side and go get that new product launch you’ve been yearning for!
Foundation is the fancier version of our skin, so why not dress it up in ways that bring confidence! For whatever reason you wear foundation, make sure it looks good and goes with what look you're trying to achieve while being mindful of your skin underneath the product. What’s your favorite foundation?
