Creative Uses of Trims, Fringe, and Tassels

Clara Mathews

At Rutherford’s Design, we are known for our use of luxurious fabrics and trims in interior design and home decor accessories. We love adding trims to lamps shades, pillows and window treatments. But those are not the only ways you can use trims, fringe and tassels.
Visit our Pinterest board, Cool Ways to Use Trims, Fringe & Tassels to see how people are using pom-pom fringe to trim t-shirts, denim jackets and scarves. One our our favorites is the multi-colored, layered broom skirt, trimmed with ball fringe. Here are just a few ideas you can use trim, fringe and tassels to jazz up your life!
Show off your style by turning an inexpensive scarf into a something special. You can start with a simple scarf in any fabric, color or pattern. Choose a coordinating color of pom-pom fringe and sew along the edge. Don’t limit yourself…try brush fringe, and finish it off with a colorful tassel at each corner.

2. Add brush fringe to the hem of a sundress or a pair of jeans.

Use a variety of trims in coordinating colors to make a one-of-a-kind fashion statement.
If you sew or do lots of DIY projects, you probably have baskets of fabric scraps. Put them to good use by making a beautiful skirt like this. Each colored band is accented with black pom-pom fringe. You can add your other personal touches with your choice of fabric and trim. You can also use a few of the wonderful fabrics at Rutherford’s to make a unique skirt.
Pinterest is full of ideas for embellishing Tom’s Shoes. People are painting and embroidering the simple and comfortable canvas shoes to personalized their shoes. Why not use flat trims or lace to make your Tom’s special? Make a pair of men’s tasseled loafers by adding a tassel to a pair of black Tom’s Shoes.

5. Make custom bedding with Greek Key trim or Colorful Pom-Pom Fringe

Custom bedding is expensive. But you can make your own by adding flat trim to the edges of pillow cases, sheets and bedskirt. A simple Greek Key trim in black with turn plain white sheets into the kind of luxurious bedding you have always wanted.

6. Add some pizzaz to a tote bag with tassel fringe.

What can you do with a plain canvas tote bag? Cover a canvas tote with rows of colorful tassel fringe to give it some pizazz. We found a couple of great totes that were covered with all types of trim, including a lovely little straw tote, trimmed with pom-pom fringe.
