Fitness

FitMentor is a virtual fitness coaching platform that provides personalised fitness guidance, nutrition plans, and motivation to help users achieve their health and wellness goals.

Project Background

FitMentor has received a handful of positive reviews for its personalised fitness guidance, with many users reaching their goals. However, the drop-off rate has increased, with only 34% of users achieving their fitness goal. And the negative reviews have risen, citing difficulties with exercises and unmet specific needs.
Roles: User Experience & User Interface Designer • Interaction Designer • UX researcher

Hypothesis

Users encounter setbacks while trying to reach their fitness goals. These setbacks are likely a drop in motivation, life activities, discouragements with no immediate result, or change of platform. Perhaps designing inclusive features to tackle these users and their needs is best.

Questions:

• What are the struggles users face while trying to reach their fitness goals? • What are the setbacks that cause users to abandon their fitness goals? • How might we better help users reach their fitness goals?

Goals:

• We have a clear understanding of the users’ struggle. • We learnt the major setbacks that users face. • We figured out areas for improvement.

Methodology:

6 participants, aged 21–31, joined a study using interviews, field studies, and diary tracking. Key metrics included missed sessions, drop-off rate, and SUS. They logged struggles and design insights, with weekly check-ins and a final interview.

Users struggled with consistency, rigid routines, and busy schedules, making it difficult to stay motivated and committed to their fitness journey long-term.

Key Performance Indicator Summary:

The KPIs showed that users found it progressively more difficult to do their exercises. They either miss sessions or quit. The KPIs also showed it is a challenge for users to retain a good streak.

USERS’ PAIN POINTS:

Struggles:

Inability to adhere to routines within hectic schedules.
Difficulty following the dietary plan.
Doubt on authenticity with no immediate considerable gain.
Disliking the assigned workout option.
Low motivation, usually due to no pressure or encouragement.
No professional guidance for their struggles.

Need:

Participants want personalised guidance for dietary plans, time management, and motivation, citing difficulties in self-guidance due to busy schedules and lack of motivation. They also requested flexible, personalised routines that better suit their needs, as they struggled with the fixed routines initially assigned. Additionally, some participants suggested a stronger motivation feature to help them stay motivated despite setbacks.

impact of implementing the recommendations

With these recommendations, users will receive personalised treatment and dynamic routines from the daily record feature [R4]. If users dislike the recommended routine or fail to record their day, they can manually adjust their routine with guidance [R1]. Gamification will keep users motivated with engaging sessions and badges [R3], while providing the encouraging benefits of each exercise or diet [R5]. For those still struggling, they can set reminders to prompt exercise [R6] or schedule a meeting with a coach for motivation and routine adjustments [R2]. After careful consideration, we chose these six solutions to address the issues found. However, users may still face challenges such as inefficient manual routine setting, discouragement from lack of immediate gains, gamification fatigue, lack of discipline, or setbacks.
After the user successfully sign-in, they arrive at the home page, where they can explore the various pages, including the Reschedule.
Here, the user may either do their day’s exercise, engage in the community, or view their progress Or seek aid on the Reschedule page.
In this Reschedule page, the user is exposed to the various options, such as Scheduling a meeting with a Coach, the Alarm, or Rescheduling of their current routine
The Conclusion—the Final Design, intended to improve users experience

Note: Profiles, Achievements, New Post, Sessions, Settings, Routines, and others could not make it the cut in this showcase.

IMAPACT & LEARNING

We learnt that some users need an extra push when encouraging a new healthy habit, while others already have that push, they, instead, need a challenge. These users are not the same.
