Kweeva — Redefining Community Savings with Digital Ajo & Akawo

Kweeva is a community-driven digital savings platform that transforms traditional savings practices like Akawo and Ajo into mobile experiences with automated tracking, secure payments, and optional delivery of goods. This case study outlines the UX design work from problem framing to impact and future improvements.
Role: Lead UX/Product Designer Tools: Figma, Miro, User interviews, Prototyping tools Timeline: 10 Weeks (Discovery → Launch)

Problem Statement

Traditional savings systems like Akawo and Ajo are widely used for community finance, but:
Tracking contributions manually is error-prone: Akawo and Ajo groups rely on notebooks and chat messages to track payments, which often leads to errors, missing records, and time-consuming reconciliation for group heads.
Members often miss payments or lose records: Without automated reminders or clear records, members frequently miss payment deadlines or lose track of past contributions, causing delays and conflicts within groups.
Logistics and delivery of saved goods are cumbersome: For savings tied to goods, users face long queues, rigid pickup schedules, and unclear delivery processes, while heads struggle to coordinate and verify distributions.
Transparency and trust are barriers for new users: New users are often hesitant to join due to unclear rules, lack of visibility into funds, and fear of mismanagement—especially when joining groups outside their immediate network.
Kweeva’s challenge was to digitize these systems while preserving cultural familiarity and confidence.

Key Takeaway Technology works best when it supports human systems, not replaces them. Kweeva was designed to enhance trust, clarity, and ease within community finance.
