This is a commission. I have worked closely with a director on many car ad campaigns and he came to me with this campaign from Vauxhall. He initially wanted a piece of music that transitioned into many different styles of music to try and match the historical timeline that the picture takes.

I roughed up a couple of tracks where the musical style started in the 60's moved into the 70's then 80's and so on, but it became clear that this idea just wasn't working well enough.

The editor had then found a track by the band The Heavy, 'How You Like Me Know', it seemed to have enough retro but also cool contemporary sounds to sit under the visuals. I took this as my influence for the music and tried to build a sense of history and vibe to enhance the visuals but make sure the music was a cool and cohesive track.

It often happens that an editor will use a 'temp' track that everyone begins to love, but the musical budget just dictates that it can't be used. So I've become accustomed to using theses temp tracks as a starting point and then bring my own unique take and influence to make the music sit well with the visuals and make sure everyone in the production team ends up liking what I've produced even more than the original temp. It's always a challenge!!
