Barbex — BBQ Cleaning & Restoration Website

Web Design · UX/UI Design · Webflow Development · Conversion Strategy
Project Type: Local Service Business / Cleaning & Maintenance Primary Objective: Clearly explain the service, build trust, showcase cleaning packages, and make online booking easy Platform: Webflow Role: Web Designer & Webflow Developer
Deliverables: UX/UI Design · Responsive Website Design · Webflow Development · Service & Package Pages · Booking Flow · Custom Interactions · Testimonials · SEO & Performance Optimization

1. Project Overview

Barbex is a specialized BBQ cleaning and restoration company focused on helping homeowners keep their grills clean, safe, and ready to use.
The company offers first-time deep cleaning, recurring maintenance, volume cleaning for properties and hospitality businesses, BBQ repair and restoration, as well as add-on services such as oven cleaning, propane refills, camping stove cleaning, and hood-fan degreasing.
The goal of the project was to create a Webflow website that made a very specific service feel valuable, professional, memorable, and easy to book.
Rather than designing Barbex like a traditional cleaning company, I wanted the website to match the personality of the business — confident, playful, and built around people who genuinely love grilling.
The customer journey was structured around:
Understand the Problem → See the Difference → Choose a Service → Build Trust → Book

2. The Challenge

BBQ cleaning is not a service every homeowner actively searches for until their grill becomes difficult to maintain.
That created an interesting UX challenge.
The website had to help visitors understand why professional cleaning matters while making the service feel worth paying for.
Customers may arrive wondering:
Why can't I clean the BBQ myself?
What exactly gets cleaned?
Is the service safe around food?
Will my BBQ actually look different?
How long does the process take?
Which cleaning option do I need?
Can damaged parts also be repaired?
Can I book everything online?
The challenge was therefore to educate customers without making the website feel technical or overly serious.
I focused on creating a website that could:
Explain the service quickly
Make the transformation feel tangible
Separate different cleaning options clearly
Build trust through reviews and awards
Communicate the cleaning process
Show the value of regular maintenance
Support individual and volume customers
Create a simple online booking pathway
Maintain the personality of the Barbex brand
The final design needed to feel professional while still having enough personality to stand out from typical local-service websites.

3. Design Strategy

My approach centered around four ideas:
Personality → Clarity → Trust → Booking

Make the Brand Memorable

Barbex already has a strong tone of voice.
Instead of replacing that personality with generic service-business copy, I made it part of the digital experience.
Messaging such as:
“Dirty Grill? We Got Beef.”
and
“BBQ Cleaning That Hits Different.”
helps turn a fairly practical service into something memorable.
The playful copy is balanced with clear explanations so the personality never gets in the way of usability.

Explain the Value Before the Details

The homepage first communicates the result:
A cleaner, safer, guest-ready BBQ without the customer doing the dirty work.
Only after establishing the benefit does the website move into deeper information around packages, process, maintenance, and repair.
This keeps the experience focused on the customer rather than the cleaning equipment.

Make Choosing a Service Easy

I separated the main service options according to customer needs:
First-Time Deep Clean
Regular Maintenance
Volume Cleaning
Repair & Restore
Instead of asking visitors to interpret a long service list, the interface explains who each option is best for.
This makes it easier for visitors to identify the right service before booking.

Use Proof to Reduce Uncertainty

Trust is especially important when someone is inviting a technician into their home or outdoor living space.
I positioned customer reviews, insurance messaging, the Whistler Emerging Business of the Year recognition, and the company's cleaning standards throughout the experience.
This reinforces credibility without making the website feel overly corporate.

4. UX/UI Design

Hero Section

The hero was designed to explain the brand in seconds.
A bold headline immediately establishes what Barbex does while supporting copy positions the service around convenience and better grill maintenance.
The main CTA is simple:
Book Now
A secondary How It Works action supports visitors who need more information before committing.
This creates two clear pathways for different levels of buying intent.

Visual Direction

The visual direction needed to feel more energetic than a traditional cleaning-company website.
I used:
Bold typography
Strong photography
High-contrast sections
Playful brand messaging
Clean layouts
Large imagery
Clear service cards
Strong CTA placement
The interface feels fun without losing the professional quality needed to build customer confidence.

Typography

The typography system creates a strong visual personality while keeping longer content readable.
I established styles for:
Hero messaging
Service names
Section headlines
Supporting descriptions
Process steps
Reviews
CTA text
Service details
Large display typography helps reinforce the brand personality while smaller supporting copy keeps the website easy to scan.

Cleaning Plans

The cleaning-plan experience is one of the most important parts of the website.
I organized it around different customer situations.

First-Time Deep Clean

Designed for new customers or BBQs that need a complete annual refresh.
The service communicates work such as:
Full degreasing
Cleaning grills and burners
Heat-plate cleaning
Grease-tray cleaning
Carbon and residue removal
Exterior polishing
Final inspection

Regular Maintenance

Designed for returning customers or people who want to keep a newer BBQ in better condition year-round.
The experience emphasizes flexible maintenance frequency and preventing heavy buildup before it becomes a bigger problem.

Volume Cleaning

Created for clients managing several BBQs, including:
Property managers
Strata properties
Hotels
Condominiums
Airbnb properties
Other multi-unit environments
Separating this audience creates a clearer commercial enquiry pathway.

Repair & Restore

Cleaning is not always enough.
The website also introduces repair and restoration support for grills requiring replacement parts or additional attention.
Instead of forcing customers to find another provider after a cleaning inspection, Barbex can recommend replacement parts, order them, and support installation.
From a UX perspective, this helps position the company as a more complete BBQ-care service rather than simply a cleaning business.

Add-On Services

Additional services are presented in a simple expandable format.
These include:
Oven Cleaning
Propane Tank Refill
Camping BBQ / Stove Cleaning
Hood-Fan Degreasing
The add-ons are intentionally secondary to the core BBQ service.
This keeps the main conversion journey focused while still allowing customers to increase the value of an appointment.

How It Works

Because professional BBQ cleaning may be unfamiliar to some customers, I created a simple four-step journey:
1. Book Online Choose a convenient date and time.
2. Deep Clean The BBQ is dismantled and thoroughly cleaned.
3. Final Polish The components are reassembled and the grill receives its finishing clean.
4. You Grill The customer receives a clean, ready-to-use BBQ.
Breaking the service into simple steps removes uncertainty and makes the process feel straightforward.

Brand Story

The About experience explains that Barbex started from recognizing how neglected and difficult-to-clean BBQs can become.
Instead of presenting a long corporate history, the brand story stays aligned with the personality of the company.
The mission is simple:
take the messy work away from customers so they can enjoy grilling again.
That gives the brand a more relatable reason for existing.

Values

The values section highlights:
Professionalism
Honesty
Customer Satisfaction
Rather than writing these in traditional corporate language, the messaging keeps Barbex's humorous personality.
This helps the website communicate values without sounding generic.

Social Proof

Customer testimonials are a major part of the experience.
Reviews consistently highlight areas such as:
Easy booking
Professional service
Good communication
On-time arrival
Clean work areas
Strong before-and-after results
BBQs looking almost new again
The testimonials are positioned as Verified BBQ Lover reviews, giving the section a branded presentation rather than using a generic review carousel.

Trust Signals

I also used several trust elements throughout the website, including:
Fully insured service
Award recognition
Eco-friendly cleaning products
Structured cleaning methods
Professional technicians
Customer approval before completion
These reduce some of the uncertainty associated with booking a specialized local service.

Responsive Design

The responsive experience was designed so users could move from discovering Barbex to booking from their phone without unnecessary friction.
I optimized:
Navigation
Large headlines
Service-plan layouts
Buttons
Review cards
Process sections
Images
Add-on content
Booking CTAs
Contact information
On mobile, the experience becomes a simple vertical journey while preserving the same playful brand personality.

5. Website Architecture

The website structure was kept focused around the customer's main questions.

6. Webflow Development

After establishing the UX structure and visual direction, I translated the project into a responsive Webflow website.
Webflow gave me the flexibility to maintain the expressive visual style while still creating reusable sections and responsive layouts.
The build focused on:
Responsive Webflow development
Custom section layouts
Reusable service components
Package components
Review sliders
Responsive navigation
Booking CTA integration
Contact pathways
Interactive add-on sections
Custom hover states
Scroll interactions
Responsive typography
Image optimization
Structured class naming
Reusable buttons
Accessibility-conscious interaction states
SEO-friendly heading hierarchy
Meta information
Performance optimization
Cross-browser testing
Cross-device testing
Animations were kept purposeful.
The goal was to add energy and personality to the website without slowing down the booking journey.

7. Design & Development Process

Research → UX Structure → Wireframes → UI Design → Design System → Webflow Development → Responsive Optimization → Testing → Launch

Research

I started by understanding the service, customer concerns, different packages, brand personality, and what would convince someone to pay for professional BBQ cleaning.
The main question was:
How do we make cleaning a grill feel like a service people are excited to book?

UX Structure

I organized the experience around a natural decision journey:
What is Barbex? → Why should I care? → Which service do I need? → What happens during cleaning? → Can I trust them? → How do I book?
This became the foundation of the website.

Wireframes

I mapped:
Hero messaging
Trust signals
Service packages
Brand story
Process
Reviews
Add-ons
Booking CTAs
The focus at this stage was creating a smooth journey before adding detailed visual styling.

UI Design

The wireframes were transformed into a bold, personality-driven interface.
Instead of designing another safe local-service website, I leaned into the character of the Barbex brand.
The visual system uses large typography, playful messaging, strong imagery, and simple content blocks to create an experience that feels memorable without becoming difficult to use.

Design System

Reusable styles were created for:
Typography
Brand colors
Buttons
Service cards
Package sections
Reviews
Icons
Image treatments
Navigation
CTAs
Section spacing
Responsive behavior
This keeps the site consistent while allowing each section to have its own personality.

Webflow Development

The approved design was translated into reusable Webflow components.
The structure was kept clean and modular so packages, services, testimonials, or promotional content could be updated without rebuilding the entire site.

Responsive Optimization

Every major section was reviewed independently across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Special attention was given to:
Bold typography
Service-plan comparisons
Review layouts
Navigation
Images
Booking buttons
Process steps
This ensured that the personality of the design remained strong even on smaller screens.

Testing

Before launch, I reviewed:
Navigation
Booking links
Contact actions
Responsive layouts
Package information
Add-on interactions
Review components
Buttons
Image behavior
Cross-browser consistency

Launch

The final stage focused on refining responsive spacing, interactions, page performance, accessibility, SEO structure, and the overall booking experience.

The website's personality also gives the brand a clear point of difference.
