Lundberg Family Farms — E-Commerce Website

Web Design · UX/UI Design · Webflow Development · E-Commerce
Project Type: Food & Beverage / E-Commerce Primary Objective: Make product discovery easier, strengthen the brand story, and create a smooth online shopping experience Platform: Webflow Role: Web Designer & Webflow Developer

1. Project Overview

Lundberg Family Farms is a long-established food brand known for its rice, snacks, side dishes, and commitment to organic and regenerative farming.
The goal of this project was to create an e-commerce experience that could do two things really well: make it easy for customers to shop a large product range, while also giving the brand enough space to tell its story.
I wanted the website to feel warm, natural, and approachable without losing the clarity and structure needed for a modern online store.
The final experience brings together product discovery, storytelling, recipes, sustainability, membership, and shopping in one place.

2. The Challenge

Lundberg has a wide range of products, from rice and ready-to-heat meals to rice cakes, chips, snacks, and side dishes.
That creates a UX challenge because a large catalog can quickly feel overwhelming if everything is presented with the same level of priority.
The website also needed to communicate more than just products.
The brand has a strong story around family farming, sustainability, organic practices, regenerative agriculture, and long-term care for the land.
The challenge was to keep shopping simple while still giving customers a deeper understanding of what makes Lundberg different.
I focused on solving issues around:
Product discoverability
Clear category structure
Consistent product presentation
Stronger visual hierarchy
Easier mobile shopping
Better product education
Clearer trust and certification information
Stronger brand storytelling
Smooth cart and purchase flow

3. Design Strategy

My approach was to build the website around a simple customer journey:
Discover → Explore → Learn → Shop
The shopping experience needed to stay straightforward, so I organized products into clear categories instead of making customers browse through one large collection.
At the same time, I used the brand story, farming imagery, certifications, and sustainability content to create trust around the products.
I also made sure that users had multiple ways to engage with the brand.
Some visitors may want to buy immediately, while others may want to explore recipes, learn about regenerative farming, find products in stores, or join the membership program.
This gave the website more depth without making the experience feel complicated.

4. UX/UI Design

Homepage

The homepage was designed to introduce the products quickly while still communicating the brand personality.
I used a mix of product imagery, lifestyle content, sustainability messaging, reviews, and strong calls-to-action to create a more complete experience.
Rather than making the homepage feel like a simple product catalog, each section has a clear purpose.

Product Discovery

The catalog was organized into easy-to-understand categories such as:
Rice
Ready-to-Heat Rice
Side Dishes
Rice Cakes
Chips
Snacks
This helps customers get to the right products faster.
Product cards were also kept consistent so users could quickly scan product names, images, pricing, and available options.

Product Pages

The product pages needed to make purchase decisions easier.
I focused on presenting the important information clearly, including:
Product description
Package size
Pricing
Dietary information
Certifications
Cooking details
Quantity selection
Add-to-cart options
Related product information
This keeps the page informative without making it feel too heavy.

Typography

I used a clear type hierarchy so users could easily separate:
Product titles
Category names
Supporting information
Brand storytelling
Reviews
Calls-to-action
The typography helps give the site personality while still keeping longer sections easy to read.

Color & Visual Direction

The product packaging already brings a lot of color into the experience, so I kept the surrounding interface relatively clean.
The visual direction uses natural photography, warm tones, bold product colors, and generous spacing.
This allows the food and packaging to remain the strongest visual elements.

Sustainability Content

Sustainability is one of the most important parts of the Lundberg brand, so I made sure it felt connected to the main website rather than hidden away.
Content around regenerative farming, soil health, wildlife, organic farming, and certifications was presented through visual storytelling instead of long blocks of text.
This gives customers a better understanding of the values behind the products they are buying.

Membership Experience

The Rice Nerds Club adds another layer to the customer journey.
Instead of treating it as a random upsell, I positioned the membership as part of the overall brand experience.
The page clearly explains the benefits and gives loyal customers a reason to continue engaging with the brand beyond a single purchase.

Responsive Design

The mobile experience was designed carefully because many customers browse and shop from their phones.
I optimized:
Product grids
Navigation
Add-to-cart actions
Typography
Images
Membership content
Recipes
Buttons
Collection layouts
The goal was to keep the same experience and personality across all screen sizes.

6. Webflow Development

Key areas included:
Responsive Shopify development
Reusable homepage sections
Collection templates
Product templates
Product variants
Cart functionality
Quick-add interactions
Customer accounts
Membership integration
Store locator pathways
Search functionality
Review integration
Email signup
Responsive imagery
SEO structure
Accessibility considerations
Performance optimization
Cross-device testing
The goal was to create a scalable system that could support new products and content without needing constant redesign work.

7. Design & Development Process

Research → UX Structure → Wireframes → UI Design → Design System → Shopify Development → Responsive Optimization → Testing → Launch

Research

I started by reviewing the brand, product categories, customer needs, sustainability story, and existing visual identity.

UX Structure

I organized the site around the way customers naturally shop and explore the brand.

Wireframes

I mapped the homepage, product collections, product pages, membership sections, and supporting content before moving into detailed design.

UI Design

The wireframes were transformed into a polished, product-led e-commerce experience with strong imagery and a clean layout.

Design System

I created reusable styles for buttons, typography, cards, spacing, forms, product elements, and responsive behavior.

Shopify Development

The approved design was built into Shopify using reusable sections and structured product templates.

Responsive Optimization

Each page was reviewed across desktop, tablet, and mobile to ensure the experience remained clear and easy to use.

Testing

I tested navigation, cart actions, product variants, responsive layouts, account flows, search, and interactive elements.

Launch

Final refinements focused on usability, performance, accessibility, SEO structure, and consistency.
