About Golwiz

Golwiz is a fantasy football prediction app built for football fans who want more than just passive watching. Published on Google Play by Beejug Games LLC, it lets users predict the exact final score of matches across four of the world’s biggest leagues, the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga, and UEFA Champions League, then compete in contest leaderboards in real time as the games unfold.
The concept fills a specific gap in the market: traditional fantasy football games are complex, time-consuming, and require managing entire squads on a week-to-week basis. Golwiz strips the barrier down to a single, high-skill action, predicts the correct scoreline, and wraps it in a full content ecosystem of live scores, team lineups, match stats, football news, and podcasts.

 The Brief

The client required a comprehensive mobile UI/UX design that could simultaneously serve two fundamentally different user modes: a ‘before the match’ experience centred on prediction and contest selection, and a ‘during the match’ experience driven by real-time data, live leaderboards, and social chat. Both modes had to feel seamless, fast, and engaging within the same app.

How I Approached It

Designing a live sports app meant solving for two completely different emotional states: the calm, strategic mindset of someone browsing upcoming fixtures and placing predictions, and the high-energy, real-time experience of someone watching their predicted score live. My process was structured around mapping those states first, then designing for them separately before connecting them into a coherent product.
User Research & Competitive Audit
I began by analysing the existing fantasy sports landscape, FPL, Sorare, Kickbase, and several score-predictor apps, to understand where complexity was introduced unnecessarily and where genuine engagement came from. The core insight: most competitor apps either went too complex (full squad management) or too thin (single-screen prediction with no ecosystem). Golwiz’s opportunity was depth without complexity. I also mapped the key user types: the committed matchday fan, the casual observer, and the group of friends competing together. Each had different motivations and different tolerances for features.
Information Architecture & Navigation Model
The app needed to house five distinct content areas: Predictions & Contests, Live Match Centre, Leaderboards, News & Podcasts, and User Profile. The challenge was making these feel like a unified experience rather than five separate tools bolted together. I designed a bottom navigation system with a persistent Match Centre shortcut that could surface in context, regardless of which section the user was in, ensuring the core real-time experience was always one tap away during a live game.
Score Prediction Flow Design
The prediction interaction was the most critical screen in the app, the action every user completes before every match. I tested multiple input patterns: sliders, numpad entry, tap-to-increment buttons, and swipe gestures. Tap-to-increment (plus and minus buttons per team) won on speed and accuracy. I designed the prediction card to show the match context (teams, kickoff time, competition badge), the user’s current prediction, the contest they’re entering, and a one-tap confirm, all within a single screen. The entire flow from fixture selection to confirmed prediction was designed to take under 30 seconds.
Live Match Centre & Real-Time Data Design
The live match experience needed to display real-time score, match clock, goal events, team lineups, live stats (possession, shots, cards), and the user’s live leaderboard position, all without overwhelming the screen. I used a progressive disclosure model: the top of the screen showed the live score and the user’s prediction at all times; scrolling down revealed the leaderboard, then stats, Then the chat room. This kept the emotional hook (how is my prediction doing?) constantly visible while making deeper content available without forcing it on the user.
Contest Lobby & Social Features
Contests are the competitive backbone of the app. I designed the contest lobby to show open contests with three scannable data points per card: entry count, prize/points at stake, and the league it covers. Joining requires a maximum of two taps. Each contest had its own dedicated chat room. I designed these as lightweight, message-first spaces with match context (live score, time) pinned at the top so conversations stayed anchored to the game.
News, Podcasts & Content Hub
The content hub needed to feel like a natural extension of the matchday experience, not a separate media app bolted on. I designed the News & Podcasts section with league-filter tabs so users could surface EPL news separately from Serie A content, and integrated a floating mini-player for podcasts so users could listen while browsing fixtures or checking leaderboards. Cards were designed for scanability: headline, source, and publication time above the fold with no need to open the article to understand its relevance.

What the Design Delivered

The app launched to strong user reception, accumulating over 100,000 downloads and a 4.1-star rating across 298 verified reviews. Users highlighted ease of use and engagement as the primary positives, directly reflecting the core design goals of speed, clarity, and real-time excitement.
Users described the app as intuitive, fun and competitive — the exact three qualities the design set out to deliver. The ability to follow live updates, manage predictions, and chat with other fans in one place was consistently cited as the standout experience.
