I first noticed problems in TipRanks' sign-up experience while auditing the product for the design system. The UI was outdated, but following the full journey also revealed UX issues that had been overlooked.
I raised the problem with the product team, but it was not a priority at the time. Later, the Head of Product shared a finding from the Data team: users were dropping out before completing email verification. The flow was then prioritized for a focused redesign.
Role: Product designer
Platform: Responsive web across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Collaboration: Head of Product, Front-end Engineer, QA, and Marketing.
Scope: User flow, UX/UI design, responsive design, interaction states, and development review.
The Problem
Registration was a key entry point into TipRanks. Unregistered users had limited access, while registered users could use the product, receive emails, and later convert to paid plans.
I mapped the full flow with the front-end engineer to understand every screen, state, and technical constraint. The review showed an outdated interface, delayed error feedback, separate email and password steps, and no clear completion state.
While reviewing the journey, I also found problems in password recovery that were outside the original brief.

Exploring the Direction
I explored several visual directions and reviewed them with the Head of Product. Some were more expressive and closer to approaches used by competitors, but I recommended the simpler direction because registration is a task-focused experience.
We chose the cleaner approach and focused on clarity and completion.
Visual directions explored for the redesign.
Key Improvements
A Simpler First Step
The old experience asked for email and password on separate pages. I combined them into one screen so users could create their account in one clear step.
Inline Validation
Previously, users could enter an invalid email and only discover the problem after submitting the form.
I added inline validation for incorrect email formats and existing accounts. I also introduced a button state that changed when the required information was valid, making it clearer when users could continue.
Easier Email Verification
I added a shortcut that opened Gmail with a search already applied to surface the TipRanks verification email.
Engineering could only support the shortcut for Gmail. We kept it because Gmail represented a large share of users.
A Clear Completion State
The previous flow ended by sending users directly into TipRanks without confirming that registration was complete.
I added a welcome screen that clearly marked the end of registration and gave users a next step, including the option to explore a paid plan.
Before: Users had to find the verification email manually.
After: Gmail opened with a search that surfaced the TipRanks verification email.
Improving Password Recovery
While mapping the full authentication journey, I found another overlooked area: password recovery. I added back navigation, password visibility, clearer button states, and a success screen.
Because we were already building similar patterns for sign-in and sign-up, these improvements could be included in the same project.
Improving the password recovery flow: The updated flow introduced clearer validation, back navigation, and a success state.
Development and QA
I worked directly with the front-end engineer during development and reviewed the implementation with Product and QA. During QA, we found a missing expired verification link state, so I added a dedicated recovery screen that explained what happened and helped users continue.
Final redesigned sign-up flow
Outcome
After launch, the Head of Product confirmed that more users were completing email verification, based on reporting from the Data team.
The redesigned sign-up, sign-in, and password recovery experience launched in 2024 and remains live today.
